@nerthos better question: Why did humanity stop toppling tyrants (the ones that will close this down in the name of trademarks)

@meeper Weaponry got extremely expensive. 3000 years ago you could grab slings and stones and make leather shields and fight the ruler's army one on one. Now one missile costs the yearly wages of a town.

@nerthos @meeper you can fight decently without crazy expensive weaponry. Us army struggled so fucking hard against cobbled together shit in the middle east

@snacks @nerthos @meeper you could probably take on at least one us soldier with a sling

@coolbean @nerthos @meeper hard body arnor sadly works really well against things that aren't bullets too. If soldiers just wore kevlar i'd get my bow

@snacks @meeper Yeah, when you're on your home front against a small deployment of foreign troops and with the correct geography. It's different from assaulting enemy figures in their own ground.

@coolbean @snacks @meeper You need to fight them with ninjas. It has been proven that one ninja is worth about 30 of them in that airport incident.

@nerthos @meeper most of all the fancy modern equipment sucks in urban warfare too unless you're ok with flattening your own cities

@snacks @nerthos @meeper hit the face this is basic david and goliath shit come on get with the program

@coolbean @nerthos @meeper ofc that works, also works with a bow, just way harder than hitting the body

@snacks @nerthos @meeper tbh i could totally believe a sling breaking the armour. it wouldnt penetrate but a supersonic rock would definitely break through ceramic plates

@coolbean @nerthos @meeper you're not getting that rock supersonic with a sling i think. You'd need at least a mini trebuchet for that

@coolbean @snacks @meeper You can crack ceramic plates with staff sling projectiles, it just won't really do anything. It doesn't go fast enough to cause a wound even with the plate cracked, there's too much mass and solid surfaces for the force of the impact to do anything to the body under it.

@snacks @meeper But they are, in fact, perfectly ok with flattening their own cities or just using chemical weapons.

@snacks @nerthos @meeper no a good slinger can pretty reliably make a supersonic crack at launch, it doesnt stay that fast due to questionable aerodynamics and transsonic drag but a slinger going for power can in fact do that i think

@nerthos @snacks @meeper it costs the government a couple hundred bucks and leaves the soldier vulnerable to lesser rounds

@coolbean @snacks @meeper And you get shot. Because the range of a sling is short enough that any half-trained soldier can reliably hit you hipfiring.

@coolbean @nerthos @meeper apparently that crack isn't the projectile breaking the sound barrier but a piece of the sling itself and they tend to be less than halfway there

@coolbean @snacks @meeper You're more than welcome to try, but survival in these scenarios depends entirely on the opposing soldiers just somehow deciding to not kill you.

Reminder that Kevlar is designed to stop high speed small projectiles, meaning that arrows and crossbow bolts go through ballistic vests

@Morghur @meeper Yes, but as said on the other branch of the thread, you'd have a massive range disvantage and would depend on the other side deciding actively on not to kill you.
It's better to just use IEDs at that point.

@nerthos @coolbean @meeper @snacks there are reasons why drones and 3d printing are regulated into oblivion.

the drone war bullshit makes all western powers really nervous, their billion dollar cybertanks made worthless by 100 dollar cyberpunk drones. million-a-pop air defense rockets fucked by swarms of 2000 dollar drones made in iran. that's why both sides mostly resort to bombing random shit far away from the front.

@bonifartius @coolbean @snacks @meeper Absolutely and I think using mass drones and IEDs against a state (especially a foreign state) is perfectly acceptable and encouraged, even though it'd be extremely pathetic and shortdicked to use it against a peer adversary, in the same way that blowing up your hated neighbour's house with a mortar is gay as fuck, and the correct way is to call him out onto the sidewalk and fist fight him.

Iran saturating the jews with dud rockets good, waco bad.

@nerthos @coolbean @meeper @snacks a state can't have natural rights, the shitty neighbor does have them. best solution for the shitty neighbor is to arrive at a non-violent agreement and not start shit. self defense always is correct of course.
