@lucy It’s the same thing. It’s even made in the souce engine.

@EmoIsDeadAndSoAmI @lucy Truly. I think Half Life 2’s atmosphere is perfect for a Linking Park video clip. It unironically works pretty great.
@EmoIsDeadAndSoAmI @lucy Also when I was 14 I thought “Half-Life: Full-Life Consequences” was the greatest thing ever.
@SuperDicq @lucy I think the true realism of source 1 is not the technological fidelity (nowadays arguably low) but the vibe.
It's the oppressive bleakness of late stage capitalist post-modernity that it transports that makes it deeply relatable and a product of its time
@EmoIsDeadAndSoAmI @lucy Late state capitalist post modernity?
There’s nothing capitalist or post modern about Half Life 2 in my opinion. I think it’s moreso just dystopian totalitarian combined with horror scifi. The Eastern European setting also adds a lot.

@SuperDicq @lucy
Yes but the Combine propaganda in HL2 and it's conflict with the existing bleak conditions is a great analogy to neo-liberalism ("be yourself, follow your desire" but in reality your rent is too high, you have workplace dictatorship, you'll be enlisted into imperialist wars and no meaningful medium of collectivity).
All the speakers and televisions speaking about progress and peace and evolution in HL2 while cops beat you up and everything looks like bulgaria encapsulate this

this is very much an eastern bloc thing.
@EmoIsDeadAndSoAmI @lucy You know the place where Half Life 2 is set in already looked like Bulgaria before the Combine arrived?
