sometimes @wikipedia feels like a mafia, some users tried to create a Delta Chat entry in Wikipedia (EN) several times over the years and they always rejected it, claiming it is not relevant enough and needing more sources,

when sources were provided someone would comment that "likely that are paid articles" and shit like that

even when Delta Chat page exist for other languages already

then there are things like Beeper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeper_(software) with a SINGLE citation to a paid-walled article

what gives???

please if some of you have experience contributing to Wikipedia (and I guess some secret connections or being known contributor is needed as well) consider creating a Delta Chat entry

it is really unfair that at this time and age any random messenger is in Wikipedia but Delta Chat

@adbenitez Wikipedia is pretty great. If a topic holds encyclopaedic significance, a page on it won’t be removed. This can be easily backed up by a few references such as news articles.

Beeper was all over the news, so the issue there is not lack of significance, but lack of citations.

You most certainly do not need to have special connections in order to contribute.

@mkljczk @adbenitez @ee I don't remember the timeline just that even with a citation it was being rejected

Debian and the Linux kernel (social.kernel.org) run Pleroma (actually it's Akkoma now?), you'd think that would be notable enough

@feld it is noticeable enough, which is why Pleroma has a Wikipedia page.

@ee here's the thing: everything on Wikipedia is just the opinion/view of whoever the editor is that's authorized to make those decisions. In many ways it's even more dangerous than school textbooks because of its universal reach.

Robert Maxwell (Ghislane's father) was evil for tampering with American history textbooks, but Wikipedia is in many ways worse

@ee they don't even put this information about his textbook tampering on Wikipedia. Can you guess why? 🤔

@feld oh come on. @wikipedia has great editorial standards and hierarchies. It is one of the best of the internet’s accomplishments.

@feld you can have equally as much influence if you choose to. If the person did something wrong, they will be banned from editing. Apparently they’ve done a good job.

> If the person did something wrong, they will be banned from editing.

@ee is the co-founder of Wikipedia also suffering from mental issues or gullibility?
