Why do bycicles usually come with presta valves anyway? Is it just another case of racers using them and everyone copies them? Most people i know struggle with presta valves and schrader is easier to get refilled at a gas station

@snacks smaller diameter and longer valve stems are better for modern rims (which are narrow and tall to keep rigidity). I call it industrial standard. Also my gas station is not pumping to more that 3 bars. My bikes work best with > 4

@acejacek aren't rims getting wider with the tyres? But yeah, gas station pressure is usually just enough to limp home

@acejacek also, i understand that presta is used in race bikes because it's thin and apparebtly used to work better for high pressures. But the last city bike i bought also came with presta valves, when i last had a flat repaired the shop put a presta valve tube in even tho the tube that was in before was schrader.

@snacks maybe Presta is cheaper? In material, in tooling, or in licence (if any). Or maybe it’s overall worse so it fits enshitification pattern. I’m purely speculating now.

@acejacek i don't think there's licenses to pay after 130 years but maybe they're actually a bit cheaper
