@lucy iirc there were actual nazi videos, like wearing nazi uniform and sieg heiling (for fun ofc, he's a comedian)
The one video that I see screenshots of is the one where he paid people to make a video that says "death to all jews" (and he reacts to it) (here https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/2/17/14613234/pewdiepie-nazi-satire-alt-right )
But well that's 7~8 years ago, so my memory is hazy, and videos were taken down it seems
@lucy oh, here you go, found that
(And for those saying that it's all out of context: they say that without knowing the context 💀 I've seen some of these videos at the time, and when he was seig heiling and stuff, it was ofc a reference to nazis)
@phnt @SuperDicq @lucy you both are insane for defending pewdiepie's nazi stuff without looking at the context, and saying it's out of context
Like, if you want to defend someone from nazi allegations, first check that they're not real, otherwise you just look like a nazi 💀💀💀
If you don't know anything, don't play devil's advocate
@phnt @SuperDicq @lucy ok, sorry, I misunderstood you
I saw superdicq and associated them with you
My bad
(Hope you understand it's not out of context - there's plenty of context showing he's doing nazi salute. What you make of his ideas is up to you. He did make nazi videos, doesn't mean he's a nazi. His community does have fascist ideas though, and that's what people were criticising afaik)
@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz really idk, he was an edglord proto 4chan prepubescent teen idol or something but never felt he was really bad and he seems to have been much better ever since he got married and. touched grass.
Never felt any evil aside from naive edgelordism and he seemed genuinely ashamed of it
DO YOU WANT PEOPLE USING LINUX OR NOT????
I really do not care what kernel people use. Differences between kernels are just technical details and personal preferences.
I just want people to use free software as much as possible. And PewDiePie’s video does nothing to get people interested into the free software movement.
@mischievoustomato @bunni @phnt @eric @lucy If people use the Linux kernel on a proprietary operating system (like most Android users for example) it does not promote free software and it is honestly no different from using Windows.
@mischievoustomato @bunni @phnt @eric @lucy Just because someone uses the Linux kernel I do not see how they will automatically start using more free software by inertia.
If they do not aware of the philosophy of the free software movement and are not making conscious steps on the freedom ladder this will not happen.
@mischievoustomato @bunni @phnt @eric @lucy Even in the case of GNU/Linux there are for example many users who use it exclusively to run proprietary software (i.e. SteamOS).
If public figures like Pewdiepie almost start to approach the point but fail in execution when explaining free software it is really frustrating, because they could’ve actually made a difference for the movement, but they instead choose not to.
@phnt @SuperDicq @lucy @bunni Certainly doesn't help that literally anyone and anything has been and is being labeled "nazi" and "fascist" for the most retarded shit, to the point that the words no longer hold any meaning.
@aetios He’s been GNU/Linux for quite a while and it seems like he knows all the basics about bash and he even knows how to rice a tiling window manager.
The chances that he has never come across a single mention of the “GNU” project or free software movement anywhere in all the research and reading he did towards the creation of this video are at this point absolutely zero.
So in my opinion he chooses not to.
@bunni @SuperDicq @phnt @lucy yeah, no, you people are severely mentally unwell
@phnt @SuperDicq @lucy he got a ww2 uk army costume and did a roman salute in it as mockery of some crazy article
@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz some people call fascist anything that moves
@mischievoustomato @bunni @phnt @eric @lucy The freedom ladder isn’t nonsense. You’ve just described the freedom ladder.
foss software
“free open source software software”
Just say “free software” lmao
@SuperDicq @mischievoustomato nah, i just can’t agree with this because that pipeline is exactly what happened to me.
I started using Linux out of frustrations with the experience on my computer with no real care for free software at first and then I started to slowly use more and more by “inertia”. Nowadays I actively prefer using free software when possible but I do not reject the idea of running proprietary software when necessary.
You can’t force people into liking things, it will backfire on you and more importantly, it will backfire on the movement. You have to let them go through the process so they actually understand it.
@feinzer @mischievoustomato But you have made conscious steps because you have learned what free software and the movement is about.
You’re proving my point, you need to consciously know what this is about and someone needs to tell you or you won’t know.
For the majority of Linux kernel users this isn’t true. They aren’t told about this and will not explore the option, because nobody tells them to.
The biggest marketshare of Linux kernel users most likely use the following operating systems: Android, ChromeOS or SteamOS.
All of these are absolutely proprietary.
@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz Also I used to be significantly more edgy when I was significantly more liberal.
I vividly remember when I was like a (non american) bernie fan that on a discord server I made a bot say shit like 'hipler did noting wrong' or call people libtard a lot, I didn't know anyone found it offensive and just thought it was funny and imitating other people.
