I guess I have spent a lot of time thinking about this lately but it really boggles my mind how many people essentially believe that they are nothing at all, just some accidental series of signals. It’s unfathomably bizarre to me because it’s like, what to these people think about when they remember their dreams?
The magical principles of the psyche aren’t that hard to grasp, but we’ve turned feigning ignorance about it into a game: we’ll criticise others for “not having an inner voice” but then say that hearing voices is a sign of madness. We’ll pretend sympathetic magic is lunacy but then run the tap while sitting on the toilet so that the sound of running water helps us pee. We’ll pretend ritualization achieves nothing but then look forward to our initiation and graduation ceremonies as important milestones.
It’s tiresome. Jung was conflating psychology to alchemy a hundred years ago, and yet here we are in a euphoric world.
This is still the best image I’ve ever seen illustrating how the human psyche works. I am absolutely adamant about this. You are not a machine, you are a boiling pot of organic nonsense, and however well you front I will never not believe that behind your eyes, you are going through the same voyages through half-remembered images, spaces, faces and songs that I am.
Last night I watched “Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy” and while I knew the majority of the stuff in it already, it filled me with absolute disgust for our fucking species, and brought to mind Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.
I realize a lot of people have never played a real shin megoomy tensay game so I want to briefly explain: The game takes place during a demonic incursion into Antarctica, and the human characters have to tread very carefully into the possessed/transformed territory, hence the spacesuit-like gear.
Each “sector” of the corrupted area reflects a human evil or excess: The first two are themed around war and sexual exploitation respectively. But the third and fourth sectors are an endless shopping mall and its sister, the endless garbage dump.
As the player progresses through the game, the demons they talk to start to realise that they can’t outdo humanity when it comes to doing evil, express disgust at their humanity-themed surroundings and (rightly) state that they would do a better job of running things than us anyway. Some of them outright say they are forces of GOOD compared to humanity.
