oh my other qualm with shankara is I dont consider the Brahmans personality (ishvara) to be illusory or lower than brahman. although maybe shankara doesnt think the illusion part and its just suggested by his detractors?

it bothers me when people call shankara a buddhist, the buddha didnt believe in souls and didnt teach about a supreme deity.

I guess I criticize vaishavist vedantic and puranic thought so much because I want something thats perfect considering ive been called to vaishnavism. it would be easier to be a Kashmir shaivi as I initially wanted but God wanted me to be a vaishnavite.

honestly if you read the upanishads shankaras philosophy is close to the plain meaning of them. can't say the same about people like Madhva.
