Wow, it has a name (obv you're not bound to balls, anything that will wedge itself into the right detent works, bearing balls are just cheap and readily available)

Using sprung ball bearings to lock stuff in place is kinda amazing. Simple, cheap and very robust and doesn't need tight tolerances
