@moth @cirno @mewmew if we are to have a powerful centralized judicial body it ought to not be fucked for decades by reactionary bullshit. now if the blue wave had materialized the democrats would prolly have fucked it up and added a bunch of ultra ideologes. i just think we need more textualists.

@mewmew @cirno @moth how is saying social media companies shouldn't censor as much restricting speech lol
advertisement dollars are an incentive for social media to purge some things that are perfectly legal.
it's good for small websites that don't have massive mod teams to have protection, but big centralized social media is getting less and less like a mere communications facilitator.

on the left didn't condemn the riots refers to the inane tendency to say "do you condemn violent shit that happened at the protests".
i support the protests but not the riots.

@nerthos @cirno @mewmew punishing people for the sins of their fathers is cruel but the injury didn't end with slavery. racism is an ongoing problem and stark gaps in opportunity and wealth continue to exist. ideally bringing more black americans out of poverty would benefit everyone. it would also create a lot of good will.
i mean, we are operating from a paradigm where taxpayer wealth can be moved wherever is deemed by the state. this is a better usage than, say, the massive military industrial complex or foreign aid to puppet governments.

@mewmew @cirno @moth you forgot the words after "you're not liable". "if you take down illegal content, you are not liable for taking down non-illegal content."
look at the historical context of section 230. it comes from a time when the internet was a wild west of burgeoning BBSs. these are massive corporate monstrosities we're talking about, and they are not mere platforms. they have giant mod teams and invest money in algorithms that promote content they deem worthy onto the timeline. they've become publishers.

@a7 @cirno @mewmew @moth @nerthos nah man you're right. like affirmative action foments animosity so would reparations. i don't support traditional "calculate the value of slave labor and pay it back plus interest", but a progressive reform like investing in black neighborhoods and preventing schools from being funded wholly by local property taxes i consider to be a sort of reparation.

@a7 @cirno @mewmew @moth @nerthos you're right about that, just trying tonthink of a way a colorblind policy could be called reparatory.

@mewmew @nerthos @a7 @cirno @moth who are you to say what their best interest is though. they're making a calculated decision because they either believe america is a meritocracy and they can be on top with enough gumption or they believe that the system is so fucked government can only make it worse

@promethea @a7 @cirno @mewmew @moth @nerthos selflessness is a nice thought and we should all operate from the framework that altruism is a noble goal but as long as the self exists "what is good for society" will always be in relation to what is good for the self, in the unspoken sense that it's what you want to see in the society you live. imo the very notion that there is a single ideal society independent of the individual is a recipe for authoritarianism
