must've been crazy to live in a time when almost everyone had pox scars and relatives who died of plague

cancer really wasn't a huge thing except for environmental ones till people started not getting killed by the flu at 50

@Arcana oh very possibly!

another gross image, kid on the right was vaccinated and got a very mild case of smallpox, you can see from the minimal scarring he only got a couple pocks, the scarring isn't really noticeable at first glance. whole generations of people were permanently disfigured by that shit. they airbrush it out of almost all the paintings from the period but lots of royalty were pockmarked too.

indians were the first to inoculate for smallpox, it was called variolation. you would inhale crushed pock scab material and get a mild form of smallpox. it's much safer than actual smallpox though much less safe than vaccination, it had a 1-2 percent mortality. some upper class euros had it done to them but they modified it and used a needle. you get a lot of pocks with variolation but they're concentrated around the injection site. second picture is vaccination vs variolation lesions. you can see why variolation wasn't as widely adopted as vaccination lol

@Arcana the worst thing about variolation though is that it does give you smallpox and you're contagious and can start an outbreak.
