@anemone @lucy @meso @arcana@fedi.layer02.net german engineering isn’t inherently good. what really happened is that the economic situation of germany as it was decades ago (the whole “mittelstand” thing) allowed a lot of highly specialized small manufacturers to do a lot of international business
nowadays china eats our lunch in just about every way you could imagine

@anemone @lucy @meso @arcana@fedi.layer02.net they’re actually quite similar to cordless drills in that you have a brushless DC motor that is an otherwise unremarkable part and not specifically designed for this purpose, paired with control electronics (hall effect sensors, magnetostrictive torque sensing, battery monitoring, thermal safety etc.)
the most “engineered” thing about them is the gearbox i guess? they’re actually using helical gears in these, and moved from plastic to at least sintered metal gears in later revisions
i suppose what differentiates them from “china trash” is that the china trash was commissioned at very low cost, and consequentially a lot of corners had to be cut. “made in china” doesn’t inherently mean bad—you just get what the manufacturer was paid for

I know you really want to win an argument here but I just don't think it will be that big of an issue and in the unlikely chance it is there are easy workarounds anyway
