@meso@the.asbestos.cafe @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @arcana@fedi.layer02.net german ebikes are the worst, except for anything else (china might catch up soon though but not yet)

@anemone @lucy @meso @arcana@fedi.layer02.net german engineering isn’t inherently good. what really happened is that the economic situation of germany as it was decades ago (the whole “mittelstand” thing) allowed a lot of highly specialized small manufacturers to do a lot of international business

nowadays china eats our lunch in just about every way you could imagine

@mia@movsw.0x0.st @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @arcana@fedi.layer02.net bosch ebike motors still eat anything china puts out for lunch. DJI might change that but they haven't yet

@anemone @lucy @meso You're always going to find trade offs really. You need to assess what you consider "good" and maximize for that. No country is without major problems.

@anemone @lucy @meso @arcana@fedi.layer02.net they’re actually quite similar to cordless drills in that you have a brushless DC motor that is an otherwise unremarkable part and not specifically designed for this purpose, paired with control electronics (hall effect sensors, magnetostrictive torque sensing, battery monitoring, thermal safety etc.)

the most “engineered” thing about them is the gearbox i guess? they’re actually using helical gears in these, and moved from plastic to at least sintered metal gears in later revisions

i suppose what differentiates them from “china trash” is that the china trash was commissioned at very low cost, and consequentially a lot of corners had to be cut. “made in china” doesn’t inherently mean bad—you just get what the manufacturer was paid for

@mia@movsw.0x0.st @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @arcana@fedi.layer02.net I agree made in china isn't bad, just that the chinese market is not currently putting out high quality ebike motors.

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy How do you define mild weather? Your description to me sounds like the Boston/Cambridge area from where I've been myself. Not sure if that counts as mild weather though, it wasn't extreme though.

@mia@movsw.0x0.st @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @arcana@fedi.layer02.net i have plenty of high quality chinese stuff, even discounting all the "designed in X, made in china" stuff that accounts for 90% of goods

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy Well I'd say the first part is covered, the second part it does seem to snow a bit which is honestly pretty but it's not that much. It has excellent bike infrastructure all over though, they even pedestrianize a bunch of roads each Sunday but most roads have a bike path and there's a bunch of bike paths that aren't on the roads but but bypass via nice greenways. There's the whole emerald necklace area.

While it gets a bit chilly based on your criteria in winter, it's nothing that you wouldn't experience in most of Europe.

@anemone @lucy @meso @snacks The thing to remember is that most of Europe is equal in latitude to Canada and Alaska

@arcana @anemone @snacks @meso the weather is not comparable at all tho
1

@lucy @anemone @snacks @meso The weather is very different in someways, New Hampshire gets way more snow than the equivalent latitude in Southern France, but Europe can be incredibly rainy and have sub freezing temperatures in winter.

@lucy @anemone @meso @snacks Not to mention that the amount of daylight is very variant too. One of the biggest things I noticed even in the northern US was that daylight was much more consistent whereas where I live in the UK, in summer the sun doesn't set until about 10pm and rises at 3am, and in winter there's only a few hours of daylight with it getting dark around 4pm. I know that can be off putting to a lot of people.

@arcana @anemone @lucy @snacks @meso Gulf Stream makes Europe hotter than the latitude would do on its own.

@anemone @lucy @meso @snacks Also, I think another thing in particular you need to consider when looking for a country to move to is the fact that HRT access in Europe is nowhere near what it is in a bunch of US states so it's very possible you'd have to start DIYing.

@affine @anemone @lucy @snacks @meso Oh it does certainly, but it still reaches sub freezing in a lot of areas in the winter. The UK gets hammered with hail for half the year.

@scathach @anemone @lucy @snacks @meso It is? I've not heard that from people I've known in Spain. Russia too, I know somebody from the Russian far east and she had a way harder time getting it, definitely doesn't seem to be OTC universally.

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz except for places where it's not offered at all I don't think I would have much trouble getting a prescription

2

1
@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy You definitely would in a bunch of those countries, you don't just get to jump to front of the queue in many cases, especially because they often have more stringent requirements.

I believe the Netherlands (and likely others) make you go through their full diagnostic process before they'll continue a prescription.

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy In the case of HRT stuff, they often do make you go through their own processes, and the systems are super backed up as it is. I don't think it's impossible but I've known people who've tried it and it brings in a lot of challenges.

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz it's something I will research more in depth once I'm closer to moving but I doubt it will be a problem

1

1
@arcana @anemone @lucy @snacks why would you get them officially when you can make them yourself lol
1

1
@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy It depends heavily on the country but in the likes of Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, UK and Ireland at least, from what I know you will not just be able to go over to them. Not sure about Spain or France.

@anemone @meso @snacks @arcana have you seen the experts and how they handle the issues..

@arcana @anemone @snacks @meso you can technically get injections in germany. but this requires an endo writing a referral, a gp writing a prescription and a compound pharmacy to compound a custom vial. you need a prescription for a medication that doesn't exist on the market. it's not illegal but de-facto impossible to get.

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz From what I've read if you have an official diagnosis and documented history it's not a problem. Someone who took the easy route and went to an "Informed Consent" clinic would probably have issues though

@anemone @snacks @lucy @arcana if i felt im a woman id just research stuff about estrogen and make some and inject it why would i go through healthcare shit lol its way cheaper and more fun to do it yourself anyways

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy That is how it's meant to work in theory in a lot of these places. But a lot of these places do not work like that in practice.

On paper they're like that, in reality they have 72 year waiting lists (this isn't actually an exaggeration, in some cases that is actually how long the effective wait is)

@meso @anemone @arcana @snacks because anenome is scared of everything unless the government tells her it's safe to use, very german mindset actually i wasn't joking recommending her to move here

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz I know people have transferred records records in germany and I had to do it already in Spain. I know you really want to win an argument here but I just don't think it will be that big of an issue and in the unlikely chance it is there are easy workarounds anyway

2

1
@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy I'm not trying to win an argument, I'm just telling you to look into it carefully. It's very case by case and just like you have your anecdotes, so do I. You said you'll research it so let's leave it there.

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @arcana@fedi.layer02.net @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz has nothing to do with the government. the human body is complex and there are tons of issues or edge cases that can pop up I would not want to start HRT without an endocrinologist

1

@anemone @meso @snacks @arcana it won't be an issue in your case no. you're old, diagnosed, medicated for ages and on pills.

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy It's funny you say that, in the UK you don't even see one lmao Not sure how it is in the rest of Europe, but here endocrinologists aren't part of the process.

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz Sorry, I am just skeptical since even here people complain how "hard" it is but it's really not unless you live in a deep red state or are genuinely insane

@arcana@fedi.layer02.net @meso@the.asbestos.cafe @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz Yes the UK seems like it's a shitshow for this kind of thing, one of many reasons it's not on my list

@anemone @meso @snacks @lucy Yes, they can't afford endocrinologists because they spend all the money on psychiatrists who ask you how you masturbate instead and why you aren't dressed in a pink frilly dress
