@sun
Sounds like this city slicker ain't familiar with Pleroma, is he?
Never mind Mastodon's creator being a big baby and sour kraut.

@sun I knew all those accounts with swastika emojis in their name were just controlled opposition.

Lunduke does good work sometimes, but you can also tell he sometimes is totally full of shit.

It's like... great dude, you found some woke accounts on the fediverse. Shame you're missing the best part.

Who's gonna tell him Truth Social is a fork of Mastodon?

@lucy @sun I’m not sure what you mean. rms just seems like the usual rms to me, he doesn’t talk about woke.

Gaben I have no idea because I don’t closely follow gaben because I’m not interested in the opinions of a former Microsoft employee that owns the world’s largest DRM platform.

@hj @sun He was on mastosoc for a short period of time before they banned him. For a long time he was only on Twitter until a month or two ago when he created a linuxrocks.online account. LRO doesn't seem like a woke instance and so far hasn't banned him yet I think. Although they got fediblocked pretty hard.

@asa @SuperDicq @lucy it has proponents and it has critics. It's not totally clear that it's actually bad. It is unusual but Valve is an insanely profitable company and the system made a bunch of developers millionaires too

@phnt @hj iirc the owner said they would not remove him, that is what set off the fediblocks

@sun @asa @lucy Yeah I can’t really criticize the way Valve works internally because I do think that most of their games don’t feel limited in a creative way at least, unlike more traditionally organized companies.

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun Jesus is Joshua, son of Joseph (bug his apostles called him JoJo) of Jerusalem, depending on who you ask he was a messiah (judaism), god's son (catholicism/orthodoxy) or just a criminal (romans at the time). Santa Claus is Saint Nick aka Saint Nicholas the Wondermaker/wonermaker, a bishop, he's fairly more popular in east orthodoxy than in catholicism for some reason.

@asa @SuperDicq @lucy you are allowed to work on whatever you want when you work at valve, the criticism that people make is not that it is unsustainable or that it's bad for creativity; the complaint is that even thgough the formal organization is flat, that there is an implicit power hierarchy that can hurt you if you cross it.

@asa @lucy @sun No, it’s actually just third person Dota 2.

If you’re gonna go into it with the mindset that it’s like Overwatch, you’re gonna have a bad time.

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @asa Valve's structure is a unique one. It doesn't force developers to work on a project, instead developers choose the projects they want to work at. It sounds reasonable, but in reality, developers choose to work on bigger successful projects like CS and Dota instead of creating new great games like they did when they were starting out. It's great for employees, not so great for their fans.

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @asa it's yet another addition to failing FPS+MOBA genre

just like Super Monday Night Combat and Battleborn before it. Let's see if it fails or not.

@hj @lucy @sun @asa Except unlike all the other games that failed in this genre Deadlock is very likely going to do well because it is actually a really well designed game.

@sun @SuperDicq @lucy @asa Hard to say really, it's one of those companies entirely carried by one product that became so insanely profitable they could largely do whatever they wanted. Many others in that situation overhired, Valve seems to have kept a relatively small core staff so the gravy train is very sustainable for them. I know I'd do the same if I acquired a golden goose.

@mer @lucy @sun I do not like comparing the man who invented freedom to the man who popularized DRM.

@asa @hj @lucy @sun I never got into Artifact because I don’t like TCGs in general, but from what I heard from Artifact players was that Artifact was actually a pretty decent TCG but Valve just killed it due to lack of updates and such.

@sun @SuperDicq @lucy @asa I don't think that the power hierarchy is that much noticeable in game creation at least. Both Gabe and the creator of the Portal series, whose name I forgot, said they would like to make sequels, but they couldn't find people that wanted to work on them and didn't want to force anyone.

Individual projects might be different though.
0

@asa @SuperDicq @lucy @sun yes, artifact was actually really well designed and fun to play, but it fell short because of "oh valve is making cashgrabs now" (while the real cashgrab was Dota Underlords) public perception and lack of updates and/or monetization/adding new cards plans.

One very good aspect of Deadlock is that it's a new setting or as other people call it, new IP

@SuperDicq rms didn't invent it - he gave it a definition and allowed for it to occur again.

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun I don’t think Gaben has ever said anything political, unless you count the stuff about Microsoft from 2013 when he announced Steam coming to Linux

overall he’s still the same as he has been for as long as he’s been in the games space, just, y’know, older

1

@SuperDicq @hj @lucy @sun there are conflicting stories on Santa Claus but one story goes that it was a really bad person who was forced by God to be kind and give presents to children

0

@asa @SuperDicq @lucy @sun “new age-y” they just never created a formal hierarchy since the olden days when they could actually be a flat org because there were only like 10 people

0
0
1

@Reiddragon @lucy @sun The most political thing Gaben ever said was when he said “Single-player games are like a feature film where your lead actor is retarded and autistic”

1

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @asa tbf, the creative limitations in most games don’t come from the way things are organised internally, but rather from shareholders wanting everything to be monetised. Valve, unlike basically every other game dev their size, doesn’t have to worry about shareholders, and since they own Steam they don’t have to worry about money, either. Making games really is just about making games for them

@hj @SuperDicq @lucy @sun actually santa claus and saint nicholas are only the same in some versions, in Romania, for example, they’re distinct entities

@Reiddragon @SuperDicq @lucy @sun in eastern-bloc there is no santa claus, only Grandpa Frost

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer DRM goes back far before Valve or Steam, and, if nothing else, Steam was one of the first ones that didn’t fucking suck for the player unlike what came before, things like StarForce that outright broke your hardware

1
0
1
@Reiddragon @SuperDicq @lucy @mer The difference between Steam and everyone else is that on Steam you can choose not to use DRM for your game.
2

@hj @SuperDicq @lucy @sun that got burried 12ft under with the revolution of ‘89 in Romania, instead we’ve had “Old Man Christmas” since then

@sun @SuperDicq @lucy @mer and infact many games don’t

Infact, even some of Valve’s own games don’t use the DRM stuff (tho they may still break due to integrations with other things from Steam like the workshop)

0

0

@sun @Reiddragon @lucy @mer

you can choose not to use DRM for your game.
Depends on your definition of DRM. I’m still can’t download the “DRM-free” game I purchased without installing the Steam client first.

1
0
0
@SuperDicq @Reiddragon @lucy @sun there's games you can buy on GoG and steam
you need the steam client to buy a game *from* steam anyway so DLing it shouldnt be an issue
1

0

@mer @Reiddragon @lucy @sun You don’t need the Steam client to buy a game on Steam. You can buy a game on the a website.

1

@mer @Reiddragon @lucy @sun GOG is seriously better in this regard because while they have the GOG Galaxy client is is fully optional and they simply allow you to download your games in a zip file on the website.

1

0

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer “in a zip file” oh if only, instead they have their shitty installers that don’t even have a GUI on Linux anymore because they depend on GTK2

1
0
0

@Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer Depends on the game, they sometimes have shitty installers indeed.

their shitty installers that don’t even have a GUI on Linux anymore because they depend on GTK2
Your distro doesn’t have GTK2? What the fuck are you using?

1
0
0

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer it does have gtk2 in the repos, but what the fuck even is there to have it installed on most people’s systems? and imagine if you’re someone who doesn’t know you can also run the installer in a terminal without the GUI, then you just see the installer not starting and think it’s completely broken

1
0
0

@Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer Personally with proprietary crap like this I expect it to have weird unexpected dependencies to be honest. It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Most people already have GTK2 installed anyway. There are lots of free software applications that still require GTK2. GIMP is a very common one that comes to mind for example.

The Steam client contains a lot more bullshit than the GOG installers do actually.

2
0
0

@Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer I agree that would be nice to have if GOG at least told users that GTK2 is a requirement on the download page.

@SuperDicq @Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer steam is mostly a mountain of electron these days, afaik
2
0
0

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer and may I ask, what even uses GTK2 still besides GIMP, cause I can’t think of a single program

also, GIMP’s not super common, not everyone does image editing or digital art to have it installed (I, for one, don’t have it installed)

and among all of Steam’s dependencies, the only one that’s fucky is Zenity because gnome can’t help but fuck it up; thankfully I could just quickly patch qarma’s PKGBUILD to make it properly replace Zenity and that works Well Enuff™

0
0
0

@icedquinn @SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer nope, it actually doesn’t use Electron, but it does use webviews for a lot of stuff which does suck dirty ass

0
0
0

@SuperDicq @Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer Well you can also just unzip/bsdtar xvf the thing and so avoid running their code. (Or innoextract for the Windows ones)

1
0
0

@SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer tbh I have to ask why they’re even using GTK2 considering the installer’s UI doesn’t do anything fancy; something like xlib or Tk would prob work just as well for their UI while being a lot less troublesome with the dependencies

0
0
0

@lanodan @SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer except for the part where innoextract can’t always make sense of them, and even when it does make sense of the installer, you’re often times left with a mess of files to figure out yourself

1
0
0
@Reiddragon @SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer I guess I'm lucky, even though I tend to stick to the Linux games as I avoid buying games with no Linux support (main exception being ones with official or reimplemented engine being open-source).
2
0
0

@lanodan @SuperDicq @lucy @sun @mer tbh I haven’t even bought any Windows games on GOG, but I did get a bunch of freebies like Postal 2 which I can’t even play because the installers are pieces of shit and I don’t have any good way of moving files between my Windows VM and Linux host to install in the VM then just copy the installed files over

0
0
2
@sun @Reiddragon @SuperDicq @lucy @mer i love being unable to run other programs because steam exhausted the x client handles and has spawned >300 chrome subprocesses

@lanodan @Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer If I’m running proprietary garbage anyway I personally don’t really care if I have to fire up Wine or Proton either.

@SuperDicq @Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer yeah, just neat when you just need the assets and none of the executables.

@lanodan @Reiddragon @lucy @sun @mer Yeah of course that isn’t a usecase that the original developers thought about.
