@N33R Wat.
I want to live in that world, where a non-profit service becomes multi-million dollar for some unknown reason

@Nexy @sun yeah but they need that money as a security, like imagine if they get sued for some reason, this way they have money to actually fight it

@N33R @Nexy its pretty excessive and they constantly beg like they are literally going to run out of money

@sun @Nexy >the WMF raised upward of $165 million ($165,232,309) from over 13 million donations in FY22. It has budgeted for $175 mn in 2022-23. Its total assets stood at over $250 million in 2022.

having $250 million when you spend 175 a year doesnt seem that excessive to me?

but im just a dumb kitty i shouldnt be thinking about economics meow

@N33R @Nexy people have dug into what the spend 175m on and it's ridiculous. they spend so much money on back-scratching

@sun @N33R better spend the money in the IA and sillicon valley, they need it more.

@Nexy @N33R I won't insinuate anything then, the reason I dislike them is because they take money nominally for running wikipedia but in reality they spend like 30-40% of it on donations to other organizations I find repugnant. It's basically money laundering.

@sun @Nexy @N33R isn't Wikipedia basically controlled by glowies at this point anyways?

@sun @Nexy @N33R @teratology I remember jimbo unilaterally deleting pornographic stuff from the Wikipedia commons and he got in trouble with admins for that

@georgia @Nexy @N33R @teratology that's particularly funny considering the origins of wikipedia. I found out about it because the first advertisements for it were a banner ad on his other project, a porn search engine. He used to get pictures of porn stars for articles wearing a shirt advertising his search engine, Bomis.

@sun @N33R The web works well, it's a service to the world, the money was donated, it never had been enshitificated in all this years. Having money in the face of any unforeseen its a good call for all the backups and all legal problems they will have.
I think it's a good cause and a bug in the matrix a web like these exist at all, you can see how much struggle have the archive right now.
I think there are real villains in other places and we are hitting the wrong people.

@Nexy @N33R I respect your position on this, I have just grown disillusioned with the organization.

@sally @N33R @sun Considering this is the first malicious comment I've found on mastodon, I think you're more qualified to go to bsky.

@sun @N33R Wikipedia is being absolutely aggressive with their donation campaign on their site to the level where I put a Kagi redirection to a mirror without that shit

Otherwise it's one of those organisation bloat where they actually have a shitload of money and practically none of the yearly spendings is going to the site anymore. Nobody needs to give to Wikipedia. Plus they also partly donate their money to bullshit

Also, now? People have been saying this for years now

Nobody looks at the books. They have to publish the books every year. Go look. They don't even spend 1% of it on the site, it's all a bunch of fucking bullshit. Never give those faggots a dime, give it to a soup kitchen or something if you wanna donate your money.

@sun @teratology @N33R @Nexy Jimbo haven't truly given a shit about actually fixing the site's issues for a long while now

@anemone @sun @N33R @Nexy I seem to recall a semi-recent finding (Good luck finding it again, it was a few years ago) that some of the money found itself in some shitty SJW black organisation that made woke youtube videos that nobody even watched in the first place

So money truly well spent

@anemone @N33R @Nexy @sun IIRC a lot of these organisations surplus ends up being funneled to completely worthless other non-profits like these

@coolboymew @anemone @Nexy @N33R @sun also the linux foundation shit.

Part of why certain people hate lunduke has to do with that. They are infamous for pissing away most money on random bullshit and not the Linux kernel or supporting funding, which is a sore point for FOSS devs, leading to the whole issues where Linux is developed by some megacorp employee.

@coolboymew @N33R @Nexy @anemone @sun as for wikipedia, they do the same shit
https://lunduke.locals.com/post/4458111/the-wiki-piggy-bank

It's the problem with nonprofits, they end up being extremely corrupt.

@NonPlayableClown @Nexy @N33R @sun If they actually trimmed the fat they could run on 10% of their current expenses. Bureaucracies expand to the size of their budgets, no matter the size of those budgets.
