@georgia buddhism typically has such a negative view of reincarnation. it's like so easy to get reincarnated as an animal

@unmind @georgia one of the things I dislike about Buddhism (or some Buddhist teachings) is that you get reincarnated as an animal for being unskilled or having bad karma it’s very human centric

@unmind @georgia like who is to say being a rat wouldn’t be a hundred times better then engaging in the human rat race

@risperdoll @georgia @unmind yyyyeah… being reincarnated at all is lame I think. I just also think human is pretty low on the “things I’d want to be” chart

@risperdoll @OneRatOneVerySmallTrenchCoat @unmind the biggest reason its a privilege to be a human is that only humans can experience nibbana/samadhi.

@georgia

> implying reincarnation as a human isn't the worst punishment of all

Does a dung beetle have to go to work and pay taxes? Does it get drafted into war? Get sold into forced prostitution?

Does it have to face the existential crisis of being conscious in a universe of which it will never be able to discover more than a miniscule fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction?

Does it ever stub its toe on the kitchen counter?

I envy the man who is reincarnated as a dog or a cat. I envy even more the man who is reincarnated as a bug.

The man who reaches nirvana, is reincarnated as a pebble.

@OneRatOneVerySmallTrenchCoat @georgia @unmind there was a tumblr post earlier (or a screenshot of something else?) that was a poll like ~you could get $500k but you have to spend 5 years as a rat living in the new york city sewers~ and i'm all like ok but that just sounds unmitigatedly good what's the catch

@OneRatOneVerySmallTrenchCoat @georgia @unmind (and of course a wild rat managing to live for 5 years must necessarily imply it would be leading a very good and comfortable life)

@taylan "the man who reaches nirvana is reincarnated as a pebble" where did you come up with that from?? pebbles dont have souls, and nirvana is the ceasing of reincarnation. once you reach that point you merge with God when you die and experience eternal existence/consciousness/bliss

@OneRatOneVerySmallTrenchCoat @risperdoll @georgia the good news is that if you have the aspiration to be reborn as an animal you that's a cause to be reborn as that animal

@georgia if there's one thing that bothers me, it's when uneducated people make up entire teachings out of whole cloth. it doesn't even matter what religion or philosophy it is; i feel similarly when biblical sins are just made up like that

i think there's this big misunderstanding among the uneducated regarding the dharmic teachings of rebirth/reincarnation. it's not a reward at all, and becoming a human is the next-best thing to cessation. even better than godhood, which has a tendency to cause vanity and more bad karma as a result. i wouldn't want that, no matter how tempting.

(i also don't think cessation seems as scary as many people make it out to be, if anything it seems peaceful, free from desires and enslavement of the mind. i wouldn't mind it at all)
