Universal user-controlled identity is something I would love to see for the #Fediverse. I have several dozen accounts accumulated over the years, I just want them all to be aligned to one account!

@deadsuperhero there was an interesting discussion at the AP conference in Prague, the question was asked if we cared about migratable identities. Everyone said yes except all the people who worked on pleroma, where everyone said that you can just make a new account.

@lain @deadsuperhero > migratable
what happens if one gets deported?

@lain One of the big benefits of NOSTR vs. Fedi is the key-based identity. Even if you change your well-known @ everyone can still locate you via hash identifier. Something similar to this but implemented for the Fediverse would be pretty huge: able to migrate across instances with different @s but maintaining a set, discoverable identity. @deadsuperhero

Or, you know, host your own.

At least @silverpill 's implementation of nomandic identities does federate at least in one way with Pleroma.

@adiz @deadsuperhero I don’t think so, really. Nomadic identity is like “groups”, people claim they want it and it would be amazing, but all the projects that have them have zero users

@lain Correlation != causation. People move instances and have to make alts frequent enough and usually have to go about recollecting followers where they end up moving. If you move and have your @ posted on your website or other network profile you need to go through and update them all manually. So, there is clearly a use-case for nomadic identities. I think it would not be a bad or unwelcome feature of the Fediverse to have introduced. @deadsuperhero

@adiz @lain @deadsuperhero not just that, but also carrying over your followers and the issue of "your instance owner decided that he guessed that's it" and pulled the hosting keeps people on bsky/twitter

@lain @adiz @deadsuperhero can we have portable objects instead and any kind of federation that's not follow for follow derived

@adiz @lain @deadsuperhero Then use Nostr, it already has a popular bridge to here. While AP and AS2 are very extensible, it shouldn't be abused to implement the next cool thing. There are already tens of barely documented extensions, some of which implement the same thing while being incompatible with each other (emoji reacts, quote posts).

Nobody learned from the extension hell called XMPP.

@phnt I'm already experimenting with NOSTR and it's actually very interesting and intruiging. But, I don't think implementing nomadic/immutable identity (however it wants to be perceived or said) on the Fediverse is a bad thing or a version of extension hell. @lain @deadsuperhero

@adiz @lain @deadsuperhero I think fixing the current mess created by "do what Mastodon does" and Misskey doing their own _misskey fields thing is much higher priority than new features. Everything is so fragmented that implementing a new interopable server from scratch now is a sisyphean task.

And the original editors of the AP spec won't do it, because they seem to be clueless based on the proposed changes to the spec.

Btw, soon we will have another awesome extension that implements quote posts and isn't compatible with the previous two. Yes, it also comes from Mastodon.

@phnt @lain @adiz @deadsuperhero that's what we get when our decentralization is two germans and a jap

>Yes, it also comes from Mastodon.

Yeah, Mastodon ignoring the other extant quote posts to implement their own shitty version is fucking ridiculous.

@adiz @lain @deadsuperhero it's a feature with a use-case yes. but it's not something that still needs to be introduced bc it already has been introduced. fedi has had this for longer than activity pub exists, and there's activity pub implementations too in mitra, forte and streams. that's what lain's saying. fedi has it, people claim they want it, but barely anyone is doing even the slightest effort to use software who provides it. if people cared about nomadic identities so much, i'd expect them to at least try it out.

i for one would be much more inclined to implement it if someone asked for better compatibility and being able to guide me through what features are needed for said compatibility and what bugs pop up with existing software, rather than when asked to implement it from scratch, not knowing how well it even works with software who already has it.

@lain @adiz @deadsuperhero But groups eventually reached mainstream, thanks to Lemmy. Maybe nomadic identity will follow a similar path (and If not, I don't mind being one of the few people who use it).

@silverpill @lain @adiz Agreed, and I’m very optimistic of Nomadic Identity eventually becoming a standard feature. It just takes time and buy-in.

@lain @adiz @deadsuperhero The project that has groups has 0 users because statusnet/gnusocial has a million federation issues with modern fedi implementations to the point of being functionally incompatible.

@nerthos @adiz @deadsuperhero there's multiple fedi server implementatins that have groups beyond gnusoc
