@georgia modernity has had a far better track record, though

@georgia Meanwhile I'm not even a huge fan of wolfram|alpha, I mean it does the job most of the time but it's still some SaaS thing that I feel like ought to have a local equivalent.

@lanodan @georgia They do have a local program you buy and use offline. There's also maxima which is foss.

@cine @georgia Yeah I've used maxima but it's a somewhat different kind of thing to wolfram|alpha.

Like maxima is effectively just the equivalent of a scientific calculator, while wolfram|alpha is great for stuff like dealing with conversion of non-SI units beyond what units(1) can do, and also having wikidata loaded in.

@lanodan @georgia You're right. I wonder how SageMath compares to mathematica. Still, worst case scenario, there's still wolfram mathematica for offline use.

@cine @georgia I use libre software because I can rely on it for the long-term and make it fit to my needs, not because it's gratis.
In fact I'd fund devs, part of my work relies on them.

@lanodan @georgia Of course. If it's part of work, reliability comes first and paying for the service is a no brainer. I was only just serious since the OP had yahoo answers in it.
