I dont like the caitanya interpretation of the rasa lila with every gopi being a partial form of radha/the goddess. I think the beauty of the rasa lila is its about "normal humans" who love God (or even who dont, and yet are still part of his love-lila) and the Supreme Lord. its about the soul and God, not about Deva and Devi or God and his Shakti power.

the role of the Shakti in the story is that its by Gods maya that each soul thinks they alone are with krishna, and also that their husbands think they are at home with them attending to their duties.

was radha in the rasa lila? of course even though not mentioned super explicitly. was she in the center of the circle? why not. but I think what makes the rasa lila the greatest lila (at least in hinduism) is the message about the dance of love between God and the soul.

but the story permits a whole lot of esoteric and not so esoteric interpretations, thats part of what makes it such a beautiful story
