I don't really like the shonen trope of "I'm in an organization with ranks, missions, exams and shit like that" (Hunter X Hunter is the exception, but I think the organization hits very different in it's story) but I love the trope "me and my friends from school against the bad guys".

@sathariel HxH is different for two reasons. First, the teachers do not care if you die. It's your decision to take the exams and you take all the risk. Second, not everyone taking them is a good person. They're testing your ability to stay alive and kill good, not your ability to serve justice.

Granted, I've not really got past the actual exam arc yet.
I just get a vibe that strongly differs from Naruto or BNHA cuz the age group is different (hunters are mostly adults) and it's not really a school.

@Paradox I'll try to answer avoiding spoilers then. Yeah what you say is true, but I have slightly different reasons. First, everyone joining to the hunters association and taking the exam is doing it for their very own personal reasons. Okay, in other shows of this trope characters have personal motivations and a background story, but it seems in hxh it's more about using the organization for your own goals. Getting in allows one to get money, information, freedom for entering to most of countries, opportunities to get different jobs. Another thing that I like is that even when there are a hierarchy and ranks most of characters don't care about it, and again the ones that care are interested for very personal reasons, they're the kind of politicians and of course characters that doesn't one certain others getting in power. But the main reason for me is that the plot doesn't run by classes or missions.
