had to explain that German nobility is so prevalent in modern monarchies because Germany had so many principalities until recently, while most other modern countries had very few. since they could only intermarry among each other, with the same rank, Germans simply had an advantage in numbers. that's e.g. why the current UK monarch, previous and the one before are from different German houses.

@kaia @georgia Genealogically Oldenburg, yes, but he's still the House of Windsor. (Cf. also the name his brother the criminal now goes by. Oldenburg it isn't.)
