@sun where was a documentary about a native tribe in south america that rejected modern life and still lived in the stone age, and later, when someone went there to see them, it turned out that they put on a show for the filming crew because they found it funny

@Inginsub a guy who went to study samoa later claimed that the samoans did this to margaret mead.

extraordinary effort has been expended to deny this though but i think it's true

@melonhusk @Inginsub in the video they had to be careful where they landed on the river shore because there was a different, uncontacted tribe that just kills outsiders immediately if they see them, even though the other tribe speaks the same language.

@melonhusk @Inginsub another funny thing is someone on their crew got an eye infection but there was no hospital, one of the guys said take him to the shaman. they took him and the shaman said "there's nothing I can do, you need antibiotics"

@Nudhul @Inginsub @melonhusk we can't all get along because cultures are often incompatible and we have competing interests, but when you look inside a group everybody more or less cares about the same stuff. that's my current feeling

@sun @Inginsub I think the story of captain cook says a lot about polynesian culture.

Show up during a festival, be polite, and get treated like kings because everyone's in a festive mood.

Come back later and demand women and food, get fucking killed for being rude.

@melonhusk @Inginsub @Nudhul I read a bunch about twospirit at one point and concluded that it was an artificial synthesis of a bunch of similar but unrelated ideas, and it appeared that marrying these people was never really respected just tolerated more or less at different times. maybe similar to shamans, being attributed a special but separate place in the tribe was actually a just a shitty consolation prize, but that's my uneducated observation

There's also conscious and subconscious desires. A lot is linked to trust of your inner group for the survival of it.
