@mia and now for my extremely controversial take - the best european cuisine (italian) is done better by italian americans and the second best european cuisine (spanish) is done better by mexicans

@anemone @mia exactly, look at the latitude of all these countries (including Mexico). lots of good stuff grows there, lots of excess sunlight for generating delicious secondary metabolites.

@anemone we’re growing many more options in europe as well now, yet it hardly affected our own cuisine

i think tradition should be allowed to evolve over time and it’s sad that since modern times we’re instead associating the term with preservation and conservatism

if our ancestors had treated their culture the way we do now, central europe would either have been colonized out of existence or exist as a bunch of savage germanic tribes

@vriska honestly that’s not even controversial in my opinion. ANY culture gets better if you stop treating it like a museum of history

@mia certain kinds of europeans get very very upset when you point out that italian american cuisine is better than italian

@vriska italian cuisine is one of the world’s favorites and that’s why it has evolved everywhere but italy

“authentic” generally just means “boring”

@mia Best food I've ever tasted in my entire life was some kind of Laotian dish that was so spicy I was crying the entire time I ate it
