i feel too young to get irc
servers and channels i can get but idk the difference between nicknames/usernames/realnames or how auth or accounts work
also ircv3 is cool and all that but most clients seem to be lacking a lot of that and from an outside perspective don’t look great

@pancakes imean honestly the simplicity of it is baffling . few months ago i read thru the original RFC in like an afternoon and pretty much understood everything (skipped server to server because nowadays its useless ). very fun to hack on and that made me want to use it more

@pancakes username == unix username

realname == it's on the tin, the users full real name. like john smith

nickname == your irc username, it's unique

@pancakes @kirby important : usually only nickname is required , and u can usually do /nick to change it . not everywhere tho
