for the linux nerd crowd: curious how you feel about an immutable linux distro for phones :o

@navi i wouldn’t use an immutable distro on my main machine (at least atm) but i could totally see this being a net positive for mobile

@ari i'm not a fan of having a separate package tree for "user" programs (flatpak et all)

so if i were to use something immutable i'd use gardenhouse which just lets me build custom gentoo images (with verified /usr, delta updates, and all), with my chosen package set

probably going to do that on my steam deck eventually

but in general i want to be able to install things directly from my distro's repository -- one day i'll finish my gentoo package manager impl that can install directly to the homedir

@navi okay admittedly if you’re a comfy gentoo user you probably aren’t the target audience for an immutable distro LOL

i personally love installing flatpaks in my user partition- it gives me the added benefit of apps sticking around through migrations. i only tend to install libraries and “core tools” (internet browser, file browser, terminal, etc.) through distro repos these days

@ari my issue with it is the separate repository and with that flathub's upstream first model, if i can manage to make the thing install gentoo packages on /home it'd also live through migrations (though i'm unlikely to change distros again)

immutable gentoo is amazing tho that's what gardenhouse builds!
