@LivingCooki fedora is not compliant , no . however , one using fedora probably means they need some specific things from a distro of that kind , and of all those , fedora is the only on e that i dont hate

@fiore uhhhh shit…
i’ve got uhh…gentoo w/ openrc… and..uh…nothing else

@fiore i dont know what to do userland-wise tbh. there is no userland that particularly speaks to me. i guess the same one as chimera bc i prefer -G over --color=always cause it lets me alias la = ls -FAG

@yassie_j @fiore yknow you probably would use fedora which is the least fiore compliant fiore approved distro but it is fiore approved

@fiore just werks is too comfy for me to try anything better.

I plan to use something like niri or mangowc on gentoo sometime

@LivingCooki listing all them would take too long but some basic guidelines are:

  • Free as in Freedom (from any gnu software)
  • wayland
  • generally tries to improve upon the tried and tired linux defaults we have been stuck with for 15 years

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @fiore@brain.worm.pink I wish Guix Hurd was usable. amd64 Hurd seems pretty broken and 32bit Hurd virtually has no packages 😔

@lolitechengineer @fiore Yes, it’s true, people have not ported packages to it yet. I assume this will slowly happen over time though.

For now the only usable GNU/Hurd distro that actually has important packages available, such as xorg, is Debian.

You can help out and start building packages for Guix Hurd though. I’m sure they will appreciate it.

@LivingCooki musl is better than glibc , and is acceptable .. “good” is like .. apparently an impossible thing for a linux libc to be

@coolbean @fiore and gentoo with a custom profile that's basically hardened-musl (musl + gcc libc++) + features/desktop, using clang as a system compiler with O3 on some categories of packages and thinlto on select packages (plus im trying polyhedral optimzations with polly these days), deblob the post unpack hook and a custom script to find any agent.md-like in the distfiles + a hand written package.mask/slop

@fiore hey, the kernel is theoretically even posix compliant.
and teams breaks my soundcard sometimes.
windows today feels like linux back in the days, when things just brake when looked wrongly at.

@fiore There's like 10 Guix System users on this side of the fedi which I only started noticing when using it myself.

@chjara @coolbean @fiore l mean doesnt it run on 2026 hardware now? it can even run on apple silicon using an asahi kernel channel

@dangerdyke @chjara @coolbean nothing matters , its not “the gnu os” if its not running hurd , but hurd does not exist , so there is no such thing as a “gnu os”

@dangerdyke @coolbean @fiore I'm running Guix with Linux on my modern machine so yeah lol.

@fiore Its the GNU/Jihad, I'm gonna have to check if your distro is sufficiently GNU.

@chjara @coolbean @fiore GNU/Hurd support ACPI, thus it wouldn't take 3 decades to get it to run on modern hardware.

Although, Hurd is not going to include proprietary drivers, so proprietary GPUs won't operate outside of framebuffer mode.
