today the US congress passed a law to prevent states from banning the use of gestational crates. i will never suffer anywhere near as much as a pig tortured by one of those crates, even though these pigs have done no harm to anyone, and i have done harm to many sentient creatures in my life. what do i have any right to say when i cannot even imagine the suffering of billions in these conditions around the world?

@Mondobizarrro i think about gestational crates and similar industrial practices basically every day, and it causes me a pretty major amount of rage and grief, and yet that suffering compares to what it describes like a candle to the pit of hell

@lizzie it's insane because this is common throughout the world and it is SO commonplace to see the bodies of animals who have suffered this way, but the suffering itself is confined to dark satanic mills where only the perpetrators see and hear it, and hardly anyone is told about it.

@georgia @lizzie i originally became vegan because i felt the need to wash my hands of all this, but i have grown to hate my desire to be innocent, because excusing myself of the state of the world distracts from the project of loving my fellow animals with as much as i possibly can, a project within which veganism remains a crucial part.
