@mischievoustomato not trying to be deep but youre literally a prime example of someone who sins severely while knowing better

@georgia "sins severely", i genuinely wish i could be like that actually.
In any case, meat and chicken are too tasty to give them up

@mischievoustomato okay not severely but often, and you joke about sinning severely quite often too. its in poor taste

@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love you shouldn't eat fish either then tbh the way fish are treated is arguably worse than other farm animals

@anemone @mischievoustomato I dont tend to eat farmed fish. only wild caught and sustainably fished local shellfish.

@anemone @mischievoustomato the fishing industry is rapacious though

@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love i am not telling you what to eat, btw, i just have seen people act like being pescatarian is morally superior to eating beef/pig/chicken and it's not

@anemone @georgia @mischievoustomato fish aren’t mammals so we don’t feel as bad for their suffering, which i am fully behind, mammal supremacy screw those gill heads and scale backs

@anemone @mischievoustomato I know but I choose to pick my battles to an extent. eating pescatarian is better than eating other meats that lived their whole lives suffering. some animals like oysters barely suffer if at all

@georgia i play a character on here and often would like not to but its too fun to me. It didnt use to be this way, it's my Hyde.

@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love also one of the few animals where farming them is arguably good for the local environment

@georgia @anemone @mischievoustomato I bet oysters feel pain, we keep find exceptional memory and brain function in simpler and simpler creatures, it’s panpsychism, that rock you throw is screAMING IN PAIN

@technolyze @anemone @mischievoustomato being pescatarian is actually genuinely better than eating mammals as long as you dont eat cephalopods or cetaceans or other highly intelligent mammals which I would never do and as long as you dont eat fish that has been boiled to death which I rarely do. wild caught fish suffers less and usually has somewhat less capacity to suffer, though they aren't as stupid as commonly portrayed. for that matter neither are plants but one has to eat something.

@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @technolyze@whinge.town @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love fish have the same capacity to suffer as other vertebrates and can be highly intelligent. many species have complex social structures, care for their young, and use tools (not that any of those are necessary for suffering)

@technolyze@whinge.town @georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love probably. the animal with the highest brain energy consumption as a fraction of its metabolic rate is actually a fish, though that's more to do with it's special sensory organs (elephantnose fish if you're curious) than its intelligence. I don't think they are especially clever for fish

@anemone @mischievoustomato @technolyze I know some fish are more intelligent but most of the fish we actually commonly eat is not as intelligent as a pig or a cow. mammals and birds usually have much larger encephalization ratios than fish. you act like its totally unfounded and that avoiding factory farming in favor of suffering once isnt a good thing.

@technolyze@whinge.town @georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love yeah but plants arguably also feel pain and oysters are probably on a similar level. if you're gonna stop eating them for that reason you basically have to kill yourself

@georgia @anemone @mischievoustomato brain size is an arguable metric it does not directly correlate to animal intelligence

@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love @technolyze@whinge.town I do not think encephalization ratio is a good metric for suffering, or even really for intelligence. mammals as a group have pretty oversized brains relative to other animals. Birds have much smaller brains than mammals but corvids, parrots, and others are more intelligent than most mammals

@technolyze@whinge.town @georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love i dont think eating other living things is inherently wrong, it's just how this planet works. that may be unfortunate but it is what it is

@anemone @mischievoustomato @technolyze but fish have much smaller brains on average than birds too I believe. one day I will stop eating fish too (but might still eat oysters) but that day is not today.

@anemone @georgia @mischievoustomato I think the real issue is like factory farming and stuff and corporate farms with Monsanto seeds are an issue too, but I do value existing human life over existing animal life so I don’t think there’s any reasonable path at the moment that could end that and provide for all

@technolyze@whinge.town @georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love I don't value an individual animal life over a human life (in general, I definitely value my shrimps and gecko's lives over some humans) but I think the animal holocaust industrial society has created tilts the overall equation against us

@anemone @georgia @mischievoustomato to even end it at this point would probably involve a violent “final solution “ for existing animals in captivity, it’s likely god will punish us with a plague through them and kill most of us all for our crimes against nature

@anemone @georgia @mischievoustomato https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2026/01-30-2026.php 86 million cattle, most would probably starve to death and the streets and plains would be filled with cows

@anemone @georgia @technolyze animals can be cruel too. many times I've seen predators (not the edp type) eat prey while its alive

@anemone @georgia @technolyze its an ethical discourse that I'm glad I'm not interested in, the taste and nutrition (which I'll argue matters less to me than taste but its a great bonus) are worth it, because it also makes it cheaper

@mischievoustomato @anemone @georgia @technolyze yeah, nature is brutal, but at the same time i find it hard to blame animals for doing what's in their nature, versus humans who have the capacity to understand right and wrong.

@pettanko @anemone @georgia @technolyze you could argue optimizing the production of chicken and meat is positive since it benefits people

@mischievoustomato @anemone @georgia @pettanko you could argue it’s basically a giant suffering factory and it’s designed to contain as much suffering as possible on unseen scales incapable to other creatures

@mischievoustomato @anemone @georgia @pettanko
The numbers are wild :
“means ~1.2 billion broiler chickens are alive in the US at any given time. When we add the number of egg-laying hens in the US (374 million), we get a US population of ~1.5 billion chickens.“
https://thehumaneleague.org/article/how-many-chickens-are-in-the-world
That’s like 1.5 billion creatures on any given day experiencing hell

@technolyze @anemone @georgia @pettanko yeah but they arent human + we are human thus we benefit. Ideally, yes, I'd say "we should not make em suffer as much", but I'm not gonna change anything, and I'm not gonna pay extra for more ethical alternatives
