@georgia Super important to oppose tooth-and-nail the people that disagree with you about what happens after you die. This is not absurd and has never caused any pointless religious wars.

@p name a war fought specifically over universalism. that being said, "you cant say this true thing its led to wars" is kind of cowardly, no?

@p my post is mostly about madhva and his hierarchy of souls but it does apply to all non universalists

Name a religious issue that people will not fight over pointlessly.

> "you cant say this true thing its led to wars" is kind of cowardly, no?

Well, the less "cowardly" version might read something like, "A person whose complete lack of epistemic humility has caused them to repeatedly shift their entire cosmology at least once a year should probably avoid suggesting which people 'must be opposed' until the list stabilizes." But *that* seemed like an asshole thing to say, so I discussed the category somewhat more broadly and said that it was absurd and that it leads to pointless religious wars instead of making an ad hominem remark like declaring someone's approach cowardly.

@georgia You'll have to ask MKULTRA. He's the one that's studied the thing you're talking about.

@p somewhat cruel and also inaccurate. ive only had two eras religiously on fedi in the last seven years. my posting interests change but thats different. I basically just went from a casual interest in vedantic religion to a serious interest in it, and I disregarded magick. thats about it.

I guess I am unable to discern how the scale works if "I can't believe you've joined a literal cult" is below the threshold for acceptable levels but this sort of thing is past the threshold.

you can call it whatever you want, negation of true religious doctrine is heresy and the albigensian treatment would be appropriate for adherents to this cathar-tier nonsense

@p I was genuinely surprised you joined a cult and live on its compound lol. its bizarre. I apologize if i offended you. and sorry my posting is erratic for your tastes?

@georgia Well, maybe if something seems impossible it's safer to assume that you don't have a clear picture of the situation than to jump to conclusions and tack on insults, you know, but I was saying I'm not sure where the line is given the data points I have.

@p I honestly just dont see why you took "is to be opposed" and went with religious wars. im sorry you found my rhetoric insulting though.

@georgia @p its questionable how much wars ever involved belief and how much was just the king wanted their shit and religion sounded good.

a lot of the second one still happens to this day.

@icedquinn @georgia Actual wars with weapons and whatnot tended to be about consolidation but "war" was not used in the literal sense here.

On the topic, I do believe there have been a lot of religiously themed wars on the subcontinent; you can ask Sikhs.

@p @georgia in the days before organized religion tribes would just admit they want to take unga bungas shit and go try to do it

they still do that but they learned to claim it was for a space wizard so the stupid people would be more accepting of death for no reward

some of the religions were outright invented solely for this (voodoo "zombies" because africans would just suicide out of being chattel in africa)

@icedquinn @georgia Well, regardless of if it's dressed up in religious overtones or not, convincingly (for example, by appealing to their existing leanings) claiming moral superiority is a great way to convince people.

I did not know that about zombies but I did know that Louis Farrakhan, using the stage name "The Mighty Charmer", provided the vocals for "Zombie Jamboree":

You're an oldhead like me. I learned vi in college, wrote papers on it, used it as an internet and usenet browser. I still use it on mac os occasionally, but I'm not as fast with the commands as I used to be.

@p @icedquinn historically wars in india were more about competing dynasties than about doctrines like schools of vedanta lol. though the bhashyas occasionally were heated. obviously islamic invasions were a fairly different breed. and sikhs did form the khalsa to protect against muslim and hindu oppression youre correct.

@georgia @p @icedquinn sikhs are a bit of a unique case arguably more comparable to an oathsworn order at that time

@georgia @p if civil wars count, the french revolution and maybe the commie revolution in russia.

@georgia @p at least the french revolution was drenched in "enlightenment" ideas and the blood of those for who these ideas didn't apply, out of convenience. the children of aristocrats deserved it, after all.
