They would rather work for Walmart corp for 14/hr and get their allotted 15 minute break, than support small businesses. Because guess who can pay compliance costs - WALMART. And because they can pay for compliance, they drive wages down. If it were truly free market, retail wages would probably be closer to double what they are.

@Tony @vriska same thing happened to weed. Many people quitting because the corporate stuff just gives you a half hour anxiety inducing fever dream instead of the mellow all day buzz of the 90s and prior.

@mitchconner @vriska yah, it happens in lots of markets. Once corporate/gov compliance steps in everyone loses money and gets a worse product

I love the pro union people who get all excited about it - and then see their 46/hr total salary package but realize their take home is $16/hr lol.

That happened to my friend. He became a union electrician and made less than he made working over night manufacturing even though the “benefits package” was double.

Then he left the union and lost all the benefits because they don’t accumulate unless you stay for like 5+ years

@Tony @mitchconner how much more is 16 an hour than you were paying your illegal laborers while making anti immigration posts tho

@vriska @mitchconner I paid 20-35/hr cash depending on the trade/skill level.

@mitchconner @vriska if you get in at 18 you can retire at around 50-53 with full benefits. It’s the rule of 30 - you have to stay for thirty years to get full benefits.

Boom booms loved it

@vriska @mitchconner well 25/hr w2 is closer to 40/hr with full burden. So to me it was still cheaper so I didn’t care lol.

@vriska @mitchconner it actually in hindsight would have been better for me to pay 18 per hour, and then just pay the $600/month per employee it is for work comp.

But oh well, gonna have to pay it anyway

@Tony @mitchconner no because even though insurance is a scam I'd rather make 18 an hour and not have to pay 75k out of pocket when I get colon cancer again like I did in 2021

@vriska @mitchconner well you can get coverage for free from the state or very cheap depending where you live

@vriska @mitchconner tbh if people asked for that id give it to them. The issue is I constantly had people asking me for cash and a lot of dudes demand same day pay. So I just paid them cash so I could be done with them.

@mer @Tony @vriska this is why I often don't bother explaining things to people, Tony. They want to feel smart, not actually learn anything.

@mer @mitchconner @vriska they aren’t worse if you stay there for 30 years - it’s actually a pretty cushy job. If you don’t mind knee surgeries, shoulder injuries, back wearing out, ect.

@mitchconner @vriska @mer well I agree unions are a good deal if you get in at 20 and stay for 30 years, don’t mind lower middle class wages, and don’t mind your knees, shoulders and back giving out lol

@Tony @mitchconner fun food stamp fact - most states give you 190 a month per person. Which is like, 2 grocery store runs?

T. Was on food stamps after I got out of homelessness 12 years ago

2

@mitchconner @vriska same, I did the math. If I cut my hours down to less than 25 per week, I’d qualify for food stamps and housing and would actually make more money. It’s gross

@vriska @mitchconner yah but the take home to qualify is like 1200 per month or they come after you to pay it back. It’s lame I think they should raise the income floor for it

@Tony @vriska yep I've seen young black men eager to work and move out and their moms REEEEEE NOOO YOULL STOP THE BENNIES

@Tony @mitchconner another fun fact

But yes, people who pay taxes should be using that money to fix roads and feed starving 7 year Olds instead of funding the idf, and anyone making under 30k a year should be eligible.

America first

@Tony @mitchconner you're better off doing that than letting more taxpayer money go to Israel and Europe tee bee haitch

@vriska @mitchconner They can't. Yah, i just hired a lot of people on benefits for like part time work here and there.

They were immigrants in the sense they came from another country, but i don't think I ever had truly like "undocumented" people.

@Tony @mitchconner oh see I thought you were hiring illegals.

@vriska @mitchconner I'm seriously considering it, but the problem is there's a line and I'll get evicted before housing coverage kicks in lol.

@vriska @mitchconner I had a few sub crews that I used once or twice where I think they brought family memebers over, but most of the guys I hired were friends/family members of people i knew/met/hired personally. like the main crew I had didn't want to be on payroll because they didn't want to lose their food stamps lol.

At the time I was like whatever, i don't care. But again, hindsight, should have just hired em for less and paid the fucking insurance premiums lol

Simple solution that would at least give an off ramp is to phase out benefits over something like a 3:1 ratio. e.g. you lose $1 of benefits for every $3 earned above the threshold. This doesn’t satisfy the anti welfare crowd, because it is an expansion of gibs, but it does allow a path off the system for those so inclined. I think it would be worth trying in a few states, as it may reduce total welfare dollars. Logic is you can’t go from part time to store manager without something in between that makes you a net loser in pay short term.

they used to gimme about 200 some but my bills went down and that's pretty much what it's on now
and i basically only eat what ic an get with it
maybe a few pizza hut trips with money i earn under the table.

@madcuzbad @mitchconner @vriska Lol see a lot of people do it and a lot of people on bennies "get money under the table" beca0use its way worse if they lose benefits because income isn't consistant.

they basically do that with my ssi if i were to get a job but it's 2:1 and i already did some math to realize it wouldn't be worth it unless i got a career that paid big bux out of the blue. which is impossible.
1

Exactly. Hence my point about fixing the off ramp. 3:1 still gives you something after uncle scam steals your money for taxes.
1

1
yea, i'm not sure even at that rate it'd be worth it if my standard of living didn't go up a lot cosnidering how much free time i have to do things iw ant, and earn moeny under the table to fund my habits.

@Tony @mitchconner @vriska you can immigrate illegally but calling a person an illegal person is dehumanization

@georgia @mitchconner @vriska its simply stating the legal status though.

Like it is a crime to enter not through the propper channels.

I wish people would actually make it easier to immigrate than complain so much about the verbiage. Why does a legitimate, educated immigrant take 10 years to get a approved? (regardless of who's in office btw)

@Tony @mitchconner @vriska its not simply stating anything lol. if someone commits a different minor crime do you then start calling them an "illegal"?
