even if you hate alex jones (I don't like him) how do you comment on a 1.5 billion dollar judgment against him and simultaneous coordinated removal from all social media and video sites without noting "that is weird and bad"

@sun agree its weird and bad and I'd say the same thing if he were a holocaust denier not merely a newtown conspiracist

@sun I think on fedi you’re preaching against the choir. I think we all that mainstream social media is terrible and anti free speech.

@sun True but they can’t say youtube bad because they depend on youtube.

@sun a) it's a ruling against him, not a settlement

b) he apparently was very hard to work with and had like ten different lawyers, refused or avoided discovery requests multiple times, continued to express defamatory statements while the case was ongoing, got caught lying and trying to destroy evidence, etc, which is why the court cases went so badly for him

c) having your stuff auctioned off, especially unprofitable companies, is pretty normal when you say you can't pay your fines.

d) he is still on most social media as RealAlexJones. He just doesn't own infowars any more.

@yakmacker he deserved to be punished but there is no universe where the ruling would be 1.5 billion can be read as anything but vindictive

he was removed at the time from everything, youtube was even removing videos that just had him in them in most cases. they have backed off since then. it was the act that was the problem.

@sun oh I misread your post, ignore point a

@sun@shitposter.world iirc it's the result of him refusing to comply with less punitive orders before it came to this. if you don't have increasing consequences for someone flagrantly violating the courts you may as well not have the courts

@yakmacker I don't even care if it bankrupted his company, he did in fact do a very bad thing.

@anemone I'll see if that's what happened (it's very plausible with him) or if that's the story being sold

@anemone at any rate the shit-tier video could have researched that but just mentioned it uncritically as if it were normal

@sun@shitposter.world that channel has been pumping out this kind of shit for years, nothing they say should be considered in any way reliable. I'll see if I can remember what I read/watched to learn about this

@sun yeah it was vindictive and punitive, my point is that his actions in court are pretty much what caused that.

@yakmacker could be, I am trying to learn specifics on it.

@sun@shitposter.world again, it was like 2 years ago that I researched this but im pretty sure he straight up just ignored a bunch of the cases against him and had default judgements entered against him. Also worth remembering he was continuing to defame and harass dozens of people over and over across multiple years so this is the culmination of literally hundreds of counts of defamation and harassment.

Also pretty sure he refused to comply with discovery so any punitive damages are going to be based off of "well you didn't tell us anything about how much money you actually have so we're just going to assume the worst"

@sun I like the terms "cruel and unusual" when we're talking about taking a guy that obviously does not have $1.5 billion and forcing him to pay $1.5 billion

@sun@shitposter.world im not accusing you of anything it's just kinda wild when you look into it. like the courts in this country are basically set up to let people like alex jones avoid this kind of thing by delaying, obfuscation, etc and he just decided to make things worse for himself at every opportunity

@sun This judgement made me think that Sandy Hook could possibly be fake. I never even questioned it before.

@anemone @sun sounds like he was trying to delay and obfuscate, just not in the legal way you’re “supposed” to.

@pettanko@tsundere.love @sun@shitposter.world he was doing it in an incredibly retarded way like, for example, lying under oath and not disclosing information required by the courts and then later accidentally sending it to the plaintiffs' attorneys

@anemone @sun I certainly understand wanting to show the metaphorical finger to the US justice system because it's stupid and evil, but when you do it like this you're just going to get fucked over and hey look what happened.
