Conversation
At the end of the day the truth is most vegans believe that eating meat is inherently wrong, which is why most of them are anti-Indigenous but nobody is ready to have that conversation.

The # of vegans who lie, and pretend to not have an issue with native people sustainably hunting is hilarious, because all of their arguments demonstrate that it's never truly been about labor exploitation. It's about moral superiority and delusion.

@subnetter we made meat from the hips (cadera) the other day over here, it was tasty. We had chorizo burgers with homemade fries (we have an air fryer) and fried eggs. Was nice, we also watched NCIS.

@mischievoustomato @subnetter @genmaicha just adjust ur diet. Most fat is due to eating too much of certain foods. Mostly high fiber or high calorie gluten like wheat and breed products, especially pasta.

Go mostly lean stuff like meat and eggs. Get you veggies in there like peppers, onions tomatoes (not paste or canned sauce). Cheese not bad but milks better. Lean bacon is good too. You can have some fiber, but stick to keeping that low, it's mostly just to make you not shit a hard brick from all the protein.

@genmaicha @subnetter @mischievoustomato just make sure to avoid all seed oils or products. Almonds, the actual nutt and peanuts or peanut butter are fine in my experience so long as it's not the oil.

@mischievoustomato @subnetter @genmaicha that looks good. What kinda rice? Jasmin is probably the best I've found. Black rice too.

The worst being white or brown rice.

Heard of red natural rice but never seen it. Think it's like only found in India.

@subnetter I don't see how this was ever in question, to be vegan is to be morally opposed to eating meat or using animals for labor or their products. can't square that circle. they absolutely are going to be opposed to indigenous hunting practices.

@sun they often lie about it though and pretend they make passes for our practices when they in reality do not, per their own logic and reasoning.

I'm just over people imposing their religious bullshit and ideologies on our pueblos.

@subnetter one time I saw a PETA guy on tv talking about Canadian indigenous hunting whales and the indigenous guy said we historically have killed whales and the PETA guy said as white people we've historically killed Indians

@sun @subnetter Indigenous? Killing whales? How?
Except the beached ones I don't see how they could. Did they ever invent boats? Harpoons?
2

@Mark @subnetter in the modern era they use powerboats and high powered harpoon guns so the PETA guy kind of had a point that there's a big disconnect between the historical whale hunting and current whale hunting.

@sun @subnetter https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/margaret-robinson-veganism-and-mi-kmaw-legends I think this was an interesting read on the subject from a Mi'kmaq lens. This copy of the essay has a few typos iirc but I think that's just an issue with this scan or whatever? Apologies in advance for that.

@Starlight @sun

I think this was an interesting read on the subject from a Mi'kmaq lens.

I wonder if this person is a pretendian. If I ask Mi'kmaw people I know, will they recognize this person? I don't know why normies love trusting academics who claim to be native. Claiming a contemporary term like 2 spirit is a red flag.

Secondly, Indigenous people aren't a monolith. It's so insane to me that so many people completely disregard the distinct practices of several cultures in order to satisfy their own narratives.

People can be weenies all they want about the circle of life and how humans have primarily lived for millennia as omnivores, but at the end of the day Indigenous people are not causing overconsumption and deforestation.

@subnetter But that doubles for consuming meat. Farmed animals require crops for feeding, so that's the animal killed for meat plus the animals killed or displaced for crops. It also kills more animals for crops per calorie than would consuming the crops directly, since the energy absorbed from meat is a fraction of the input.

The same goes for hunting game. Hunting is not sustainable at scale and still kills more animal per calorie than farming would. The fact also still stands that hunting murders an animal each time when that caloric and nutritional demand could also be met with crops at a relatively flat animal sacrifice.

Appeal to "indigenous culture" is idiotic identity politics that would be called out for being the retarded boomer argument that it is in any other context.

@Mahimiko

Just get out of my mentions already, you're over here talking about contemporary farming practices as if it applies here. You have no idea how our animals are raised or cultivated in our pueblos.

Just because your belief system isn't rooted in reality, doesn't mean mine isn't. You just admitted that animals die regardless. You are pumping bullshit metrics on hunting when you don't know shit, you don't know the biodiversity of any land you're speaking about.

It's not an appeal to identity politics, because eating meat is not inherently wrong, and Indigenous practices are not causing the majority of deforestation and resource consumption. If you're residing in any part of the west that is on you, you benefit from that shit. You benefit when Andean people struggle to get access to quinoa because of the increased western demand. You are not free from being exploitative because you are vegan. You benefit from genocide every single day, and you have the audacity to say this is an appeal to IDPOL.

You are not serious people and I can't wait when settlers get what they have coming.

@Mahimiko @subnetter

I'd be more than willing to kill a fellow human being for my own survival, what makes you think I wouldn't kill an animal to feed off it? You bunch can only aspire to be food for the likes of me when shit hits the fan, just wait.

@scathach I honestly try to avoid these people at all costs, they are not serious people so I do not entertain them. I also know many former native vegans who were shamed for participating in sweat lodges and other practices. I mean, there's an entire industry built off peddling plastic as ethical "vegan leather" when thrifted leather can be purchased.

When I ask people about the personal advocacy in their lives, I'm not asking about whether or not someone donated to a cause to make themselves feel better. And yet, these people subscribe to an entire ideology where they can absolve themselves of personal responsibility towards the earth because "meat is murder" and they shop at whole foods. It reminds me of choice feminism and liberal feminism.

Ironically enough, they also forget that many cultures also view plants as living beings that also deserve respect.

@subnetter @sun Do you expect every Mi'kmaq person to know every other Mi'kmaq person? You yourself admit Indigenous people aren't a monolith immediately after opening with doubting the validity of this person's identity because maybe some theoretical Mi'kmaq may not have personally heard of her. You're completely disregarding the text to immediately attempt to claim this person isn't a real native.

Nowhere did I claim I was treating Indigenous people as a monolith, either, nor do I recall that being implied anywhere in this text. As I stated, this is presented from a Mi'kmaq lens, and I brought it up because it talks about the issue Sun was mentioning. There is a massive disconnect between traditional hunting practices and the modern meat industry. That is what this article is about, and that is what I was responding to.

@Starlight @sun if you are actually familiar with the history of Canada, fake bands such as the Qualipu, and consider the fact that this person themselves admits that their Veganism is a contemporary practice, then you wouldn't be surprised I am absolutely going to question their legitimacy.

Pretendianism is a huge issue in Canada and America, various academics have taken up space and misrepresented themselves as Indigenous and done irreversible harm. So no, I have zero issue with questioning it. And yes, our communities, pueblos, and bands are tight knit enough to sniff bullshit like this out because , surprise surprise we all know each other. You wouldn't understand. If I'm proven incorrect, I'll apologize but nothing in that article necessarily contradicts anything I've stated.

@Starlight @sun reading comprehension helps, it's stated in the article itself.

A couple outliers being vegan doesn't mean that veganism has a right to be imposed onto others, especially towards tribes who rely on it due to food insecurity.

I really hope your lens into Indigeniety isn't limited to reading articles on the anarchist library, because I see vegans circulating the same articles by the same academics as if it's a gotcha.

@subnetter if this is a subpost of me you could've responded to my actual points instead of saying I'm anti-indigenous but hiding it in a subpost. ive told you that my ideology isnt western veganism, its ahimsa, and that I view sustainably living off of the land anywhere as less harmful to the earth than western veganism and therefore preferable. however, I explained that there is not enough meat in the wild for the current taste for meat to be satisfied for everyone, and that species would go extinct. so the average person must also eat less meat. I also said that the spiritual harm from harming another conscious creature in hunting is erased by showing proper reverence, as indigenous peoples originally did. you addressed none of this. my concern is not with choice, but with dharma and karma.
