mithya originally meant neither essentially real nor essentially unreal, but transient like an illusion, not "totally unreal"

many hear illusion and think fake, but the early advaita vedantins were much more nuanced than this. in fact the view of sankara was likely that the world is real because its based on brahman, but that it is transient. this is very similar to my understanding of the world as real but dreamlike in its transience and lack of universality.
