the nature of idolatry can be explained quite well by the bhagavad gita's exposition of the types of knowledge according to the gunas. established in sattva a man sees oneness everywhere, and thus cannot be an idolater. a rajasic man established in difference is a polytheist, which is a form of idolatry. but a man enmeshed in tamas--who takes the part for the whole in ignorance--is the ultimate idolater.
