@georgia @vitalis Genuinely curious why you dislike it. Branding criminals gets all the benefits with very few of the drawbacks. Unlike hanging or cutting hands, the criminal doesn't get any disabling injuries that would prevent working or doing anything else, and it doesn't require massive investments in money and manpower paid by the victims like it is the case with prisons; however with the brand everyone around can know what the criminal did and keep themselves safe, and it's also painful enough to teach a lesson.

It's an almost perfect solution for any crime that isn't horrible enough to merit execution.

In Romania, there's a Vlad Tepes castle that's basically a museum of torture devices he used on his enemies. The stakes in the field is the most notable, he used a wide range of torture devices.

This is the Vlad castle that you see near Brasov... the Bran Castle. Though supposedly he may have barely stayed here.

@nerthos @vitalis first off, desertion shouldnt be a crime, second, only God should whose justice is perfect should mete out punishment like that.

@georgia @vitalis I agree conditionally on the first part, the second part is bullshit IMO, a god that frowns upon people keeping eachother safe from criminals is no god at all, but a hurdle for humanity to overcome.

@nerthos @vitalis jesus would be opposed to all forms of torture inflicted on man by another

@georgia @vitalis Sure but he'd also be opposed to predation of one man upon another, like theft, arson, murder, rape, etc.

I am much more partial to just instantly killing the criminal in the act (which scripture explicitly mentions as not being the sin of bloodshed at all, it is righteous and approved by God) but that's not doable at the current scale of humanity and way of life, since criminals have plenty of opportunity to sneak and plenty of friends and laws to cover for them when it's time for punishment. Branding them so everyone knows is a decent compromise between punishment, safety of victims, and physical integrity of the criminal.
