the only reason one should be a computer toucher is to control their own computing experience and make fun little games for personal usage and things. learning about computer "science" is a waste of time if you arent actually applying it (because it sure doesn't help you understand the world and its creatures) and especially if youre selling out your services as a codemonkey

Recently, when I contemplate advice I would give, an idea keeps coming back to me.

"If you find something important online, you should write it down in a note book, so you can keep it."

@georgia Computer science is a very interesting and beautiful field of mathematics and desecrating it by using your knowledge to be a codemonkey increasing shareholder value earns a thousand lifetimes in Samsara's asscrack

t. codemonkey

@scathach while computer science enables one to think in new ways (https://www.jsoftware.com/papers/tot.html a long time ago i read this essay), computer scientists are very fond of applying their science onto reality itself. thus you get computer touchers saying things like that God is describable by an algorithm. im not making that up, an atheist who views the world as essentially nothing more than information on fedi said that.

@scathach so, thats bad. reducing the world to information is bad. reducing the mind to a computer is bad.

@georgia That has nothing to do with CS though?

@scathach for this person it was a consequence of an obsession with computer science. it literally became their whole world. but you're right, learning a programming language or the language of math is as lovely as learning a spoken language.

@georgia @scathach just don't do that. computer science is one interesting field in a whole world of non-overlapping magisteria

@georgia Using computers to compute is fine too. It's useful for solving math models and try to predict some physical phenomena. It has always been my favorite use of computers, I like simulations and then comparing the results with the real thing.

@cinerion i consider this too to be "fun personal usage"

@georgia One thing I'd like to see as free software is a chemical process design and simulation program. There's really only one program like that and it's absolutely proprietary. It kinda sucks too.

@scathach @georgia this. Computer science is about computers in the same way astronomy is about telescopes.
