"you don't NEED more"

t. suckless shill (proceeds to install 826 extensions with conflicting dependencies to have a usable desktop environment)

@adiz @meso @yomiel it's literally the only desktop since Plan 9 featuring original ideas.
Only reason why I don't use it is RAM use and current preference for conventional desktops (XFCE, Cinnamon) that's purely based on the fact that I have to be used by Windows for work stuff

@dagda @yomiel @adiz @meso @mischievoustomato extensions? we just patch the source, most if not all of the patches don't have external dependencies

it's also just a window manager not a full fledged desktop environment

@meso I've never actually had Gnome crash on me. Or KDE, either, tbf. @dagda @yomiel @mischievoustomato

@kirby @adiz @dagda @meso @yomiel @mischievoustomato what is the difference between window manager and desktop environment?

@Cyrillic @adiz @dagda @kirby @meso @mischievoustomato
It's pretty loose but generally people define a windows manager as literally just the part that sets and renders windows, whereas as a desktop environment is generally 2 or more programs or a software suite. by this definition even I3 is technically a desktop environment whereas bspwm or awesome are just window managers.

@yomiel @Cyrillic @adiz @kirby @meso @mischievoustomato so desktop environments are also windows managers brain10

Also GNOME is planning to support a tiling-WM style mode of use

@dagda @Cyrillic @adiz @kirby @meso @yomiel yep, I'm not big into tiling, but the gnome devs are great, so most likely it'll be another great addition

@Cyrillic @adiz @dagda @meso @yomiel @mischievoustomato the window manager literally just manages client windows whilst a desktop environment usually has a bunch of extra features alongside just managing windows

for me personally tiling wms are great to operate servers only, where you work with CLI interfaces anyways and benefit from keyboard-centric workflow as well as less bloat and instability than full DEs

@dagda @Cyrillic @adiz @kirby @meso @yomiel yeah, I don't use servers. When I had mine, I just used the cli because that was ok for me

@mischievoustomato Yeah, I've never interfaced with a server that had a GUI outside of initial installation GUI. Beyond that, just SSH in with terminal and do everything via CLI. @Cyrillic @yomiel @kirby @dagda @meso

for serious stuff this is the way to go.
For hobby stuff and home servers I don't think it's a crime to make it look nice

@dagda @Cyrillic @adiz @kirby @meso @yomiel when i have my own server stuff, I'll let it have a full blown gnome install. pekochad

@dagda I just don't see a huge point considering you will hardly ever be inside the machine past initial setup of services or running maintenance/updates. Plus, basically none of your systems on the server are going to have GUIs anyway. @Cyrillic @kirby @meso @yomiel @mischievoustomato

@kirby @adiz @dagda @meso @yomiel @mischievoustomato that sounds very arbitrary, for example is dwm with dwmblocks now a desktop environment?
