i forgot that building a rust application would involve building rust. Also freebsd just builds all the backends by default

@snacks and on wayland the correct option is so blatantly obvious the question starts to feel silly, foot always foot. maybe havoc if ur on like an ultra minimalist kick but usually foot

@coolbean ok, but that's not blazingly fast with fearless concurrency and gpu accelerated

@coolbean @snacks honestly it's insane how many people use crazy ass GPU accelerated terminals. Like it's just text lol. Xterm, st, and foot are all I use

@snacks @coolbean do you really though? I don't that's for sure. I don't even use wallpapers on my setups I just don't care lol.

Listens to Baroque while coding murder.exe newt

@snacks if you use KDE, then konsole. Otherwise, rxvt.

@scathach by what metric? It has really high throughput and seems to have output latency in line with the best nowadays

@snacks Startup time, the only benchmark that actually matters for terminals

@scathach my average terminal lifetime must be hours tbh

@monkey @snacks @coolbean foot even supports the background effect protocol (blur)

@monkey @snacks @coolbean the things that bother me about foot, compared to konsole:

  • ignores touchpad scroll speed settings
  • text selection feels finicky
  • no support for kitty graphics (i swear i have a good use case)
  • can’t reload config/change themes at runtime beyond switching dark/light

@coolbean @monkey @snacks konsole basically supports everything. a million options as usual for KDE, kitty graphics, complex text layout (bidirectional text etc.), file browser sync with dolphin including automounting remote directories via kio_fuse… if you can accept relatively slow startup then it’s actually a pretty good term

@rose @mia @coolbean @monkey @snacks

honestly, still preferable to me than sending base64 pixel data over a tty

idk that feels kinda wrong

@navi @monkey @snacks @coolbean @rose you can also use shm for kitty graphics but that obviously doesn’t work over ssh

@monkey @snacks @navi @coolbean @rose also the way to avoid sixel/kitty escape code corruption when the screen is shared with other stuff is to just put all the data in a single write() call because that’s atomic on all platforms that matter

@haematophage @monkey @snacks literally why

like every time i try using that godforsaken terminal emulator i regret my decision within an hour because configuring urxvt is literally the worst thing in the known universe SOMEHOW

@coolbean @haematophage @monkey @snacks it's literally so easy? just copy over your same .xresources that you've been using since like 2009

@rose @snacks @haematophage @monkey yes except all of the options have different names and formats with far lesser documentation and worse defaults
