I think what annoys me most is when christian larpers try to quote scripture at me, a cradle catholic, when I know they only recently converted after being atheist all their life.

@georgia @vitalis if you think about it, the internet is even more a world of illusion then "real life" - most of one's online persona is based on appearance rather than deed. so many of these aesthetically christian accounts are basically playing dress-up.

I also dislike when people film their good deeds and post it to their social media. just do the right thing when no one else is looking or will ever know, without seeking the validation of random people to congratulate you on your values

are you of the opinion that marian devotion is idolatry? I have also heard arguments that collecting and displaying anime figurine statues is idol worship

Yes, it is idolotry. Mary was a simple vessel. Mat 12:46-50 While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47. Someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.” 48. But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49. And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! 50. “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

Does Scripture Justify Mary Worship? What Would Jesus Say?

Based on biblical evidence, Scripture does not justify the worship of Mary, and Jesus' own recorded words strongly indicate He would oppose such practices.

Jesus' Direct Teaching on Worship

Jesus explicitly addressed the question of worship when tempted by Satan. In Matthew 4:10, Jesus declared: "Be gone, Satan, for it is written: 'You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only'" [^1]. This represents Jesus' clearest statement on worship - it is to be directed to God alone, without exception.

Mary's Own Words

Mary herself provides compelling evidence against her own worship. In her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-49), Mary states: "My soul exalts the Lord... My spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior" [^1]. By calling God her "Savior," Mary explicitly acknowledges herself as a sinner in need of salvation, describing herself as a "lowly bondslave" [^1]. Mary worships God, not the reverse.

Jesus' Rejection of Special Honor for Mary

When a woman in the crowd declared, "Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed," Jesus responded: "Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it" (Luke 11:27-28) [^1]. This was a perfect opportunity for Jesus to establish Mary worship, yet He explicitly redirected attention away from Mary toward obedience to God's Word [^1].

Biblical Prohibitions Against Idolatry

The Ten Commandments explicitly forbid worship of anyone other than God: "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol... You shall not worship them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God" (Exodus 20:3-5) [^1]. Deuteronomy 6:13 reinforces this: "You shall fear only the Lord your God. You shall worship Him" [^1].

The Catholic Distinction: Worship vs. Veneration

Catholics distinguish between:

  • Worship (latria): Reserved for God alone
  • Veneration (dulia): Honor given to saints
  • Hyperdulia: Higher veneration specifically for Mary [^2]

Catholics argue they don't worship Mary but venerate her, seeking her intercession like "asking a friend for help" [^2].

Biblical Analysis of This Distinction

However, this theological distinction faces several biblical challenges:

  1. No Biblical Precedent: Scripture contains "not one single place... where it ever suggests we are to worship Mary, and everywhere it is clearly stated we worship God and Him alone" [^1].

  2. One Mediator: 1 Timothy 2:5 states there is "one Mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" - not angels, saints, or Mary [^1].

  3. Direct Access: The biblical pattern shows believers going "directly to God through our relationship with Jesus Christ" without need for other intercessors [^1].

What Would Jesus Say?

Based on Jesus' recorded words and actions, He would likely:

  1. Redirect worship to God: As He did in Matthew 4:10 and Luke 11:27-28
  2. Emphasize His unique role: As the one Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5)
  3. Point to Scripture: Jesus consistently used Scripture to correct false practices
  4. Warn against idolatry: Following the pattern of Old Testament prophets

Jesus demonstrated "a consistent, strong rejection of any special honor" to Mary, refusing to allow anyone to think "she had some claim on Him, that she had some access that no one else has" [^1].

Conclusion

While Catholics maintain a theological distinction between worship and veneration, Scripture provides no basis for directing prayers, devotion, or religious honor to Mary. Jesus' own words and example point consistently toward exclusive worship of God and direct access to the Father through Christ alone. The biblical Mary herself exemplifies this by worshipping God as her Savior rather than accepting worship from others.

@vitalis @lizzie while i find the hyperdulia vs latria distinction somewhat unconvincing I believe marian devotion is important because God the Father and God the Son are both masculine figures, and God is not masculine, feminine, or even neuter. scripturally i think marian devotion is only supported by the gospel of luke while her immaculate conception, perpetual virginity, and assumption/dormition are not supported at all. but canon scripture isnt itself revelation, its "just" the words of holy people for the most part. only "genuine" parts of the torah, the words of the prophets, and the words of Christ (Q source) are direct revelation imo. and i believe that revelation is a continuous thing, and while a lot of marian devotion was created by theologians and mariologists much of it was genuinely revealed to saints and to people who would become saints. i also believe that the veneration of icons and even idols passes through to their source, as that one council of whatever said. so not all graven images are bad imo, unless theyre bowed to and believed to be more divine than anything of that material is. its like in hinduism, forms of God can teach you about God, but one must eventually look past the forms. just my two cents.

@lizzie @vitalis @georgia you don't speak for everyone, accuser. Satan and his followers hate hearing the truth so your reaction is very telling.

@vitalis @georgia @lizzie You could likely find examples of both being idol worship even if you want to prey to 1000 catholic saints. The mexicain cartels worshiping skulls and mary then doing a bunch of occult things is clearly on the other side of a line.
