Idk if you guys really think about it much but Nintendo used to be so good and it's so bad now

1. idk I really enjoyed the 3DS! I think it had a really nice lineup of exclusive titles and I liked the virtual console stuff. I was huge on Animal Crossing New Leaf, 3DS Pokemon titles, and Mario kart 7

2. NSMB2 was really good, I thought. I played it like twice through. It suffers from being aesthetically bland just like all the "New" Mario games are, but they had some fun levels based on Van Gough and other interesting stuff in there. I also thought the Coin Gimmick was fun

@anemone @oshy oddly enough I loved stereoscopic 3D as a kid but hated 3D movies when they were in vogue

@oshy @anemone I was kind of a NSMB hater in the first place, but I realllllly never heard anything good about this particular one

PNPGames was liquidating games without cases and I got it for cheap, so I'll eventually give it a go anyways, same with NSMB Wii, acquired it for cheap, somehow, IIRC *Look behind me* Yes

@oshy What do you mean "think about it"? To me it's blatantly obvious when and why the quality curve started bending downwards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoru_Iwata

@quad Iwata was a legend and this new guy absolutely fucking sucks. I hate the direction Nintendo's been in since Iwata's death

@georgia @oshy @anemone the 3D effect on the 3ds is really good, it shoudl really have been about double the resolution though.

@coolboymew @anemone I enjoyed NSMB Wii as well, but same issues.
It's not anything you'll be ranting and raving about, it's nothing huge or new or exciting, the music and graphics are very bland and generic, but the gameplay and level design is extremely fucking tight and basically flawless

@oshy He is still missed, and only more so with every passing day.

@aetios @oshy @anemone to the mind of a child whatever nintendos main console is is peak graphics. I didnt mind the DSs resolution until the Wii and 3DS, I found the WiiUs graphics "too good".

@georgia @oshy @anemone I didn't have any consoles until I was 19 or so, although I did play Pokémon on emulators when I was 14 ish

@oshy @anemone Pretty much

But I started with DS and I somewhat hated it. It really wasn't the SMB4 I wanted and then the series continued being rather unimpressive. I HAD to pick up the one on Wii U around when it released because there was NOTHING else. It was okay at best. I dunno if it's the best, but I feel like NSMBDS should've been "this good" from the get go

A kind of disappointing middle between retro and new bland. 3D Land and World were definitively more like it IMO. Wonder is the NSMB formula mastered, with a new gimmick that made it worth it. They also learned from the 3D World overworld and used it for Wonder, which is all the much better, as that type of overworld made way more sense than the crappy semi-retro map

Hilariously, Sonic has just caught up with NSMB with Sonic Superstar with the exact same issues without knowing how to properly modernise it so you're left with something alright but still an unsatisfying between between new and retro that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be

@georgia @anemone @oshy
You could do 3D platforming without very specific camera angles the depth effect was goated

@coolboymew @oshy @anemone the coin rush theme isn't really interesting and there's nothing innovative about the powerups and level design but it's a solid mario game overall. the mario level design principles are applied well, they're just familiar and therefore a little predictable
