once again I find myself bashing my head against linux file managers

we have:

  • Dolphin (silently breaks if not running under KDE)
  • cosmic files (silently breaks if not running under KDE)
  • nautilus (insufferably minimalistic)
  • ???

@lunareclipse thunar? i think it and pcmanfm are the two i've seen people use outside of DEs the most (i used to use thunar before going all on ranger / cli)

@navi @lunareclipse thunar is pretty good yea . also there is the simple “not using a file manager” which has been great for me , the only thing i was using one for was for drag and dropping but then i found out about ripdrag and im using this oneliner

@fiore @navi @lunareclipse what i do because i use a lot of KDE programs but don’t want the full DE because prefer Niri is: i simply set XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE in the session (so systemd’s user environment as well as the dbus activation environment), and that makes it launch whatever it needs to run but no more than that

@fiore @navi @lunareclipse it’s just hard for me to let go of it because it’s that good. even switching from konsole to foot is surprisingly hard because i miss things and the way mouse selection works just doesn’t feel right…

@lunareclipse i just use the shell to manage files, mostly out of paranoia, but i assume you're a normal person

@fiore @navi @lunareclipse i’m using foot most of the time except for when it doesn’t work…

and it’s also raised my standards for how much lag i’m willing to tolerate on a 12yo laptop

@fiore @navi @lunareclipse it does not lag and takes at most two frames to open when i press the shortcut (less if i use its server/client mode)

@nu @lunareclipse @navi wdym ? i am not using dmenu at all , just using fuzzel’s dmenu flag , but that just means it behaves like a simple graphical input selector

@fiore @navi @lunareclipse tbh i might do this. ive been trying to figure out what file manager to use on my new chimera install but i dont like the options and im doing fine with shell alone

@kirby if I followed the paranoia I would be using QubesOS
