llm taught me a shitload about a bunch of topics I couldn't find easily digestible information about.

@sun Thats basically the greatest use ive gotten out of them; stuff thats really hard to search and filter for.

Helps if you aren't an idiot and actually pay attention to catch obvious comfabulations and vet the info

@sun actually if you ever ask chatgpt anything, you inevitably become the person on the left

@sun I used an academic bot to find sources and it did a good job formatting the search terms and drawing up a summary. I wish the common chatbots had citations as well.

@meeper @sun It really helped me set up some scuffed networking shit on my home server that I was absolutely clueless about before. Also noticed that LLMs have gotten a LOT better at troubleshooting since a few years ago.

@VD15 @sun It's stupid how free llm improvements have been-

@mischievoustomato @lain @sun "AI is bad at what it does" is not a good argument. its just bad for humanity in general

@georgia @lain @sun @mischievoustomato most ai companies suck. And many people use it in a bad way.

@grillchen @lain @sun @mischievoustomato its going to become a great evil and we can see the start of it now

@georgia @lain @sun for me its been an incredible boon. It'll shake things up but I'm happier that it exists now.

@grillchen @lain @georgia @sun i use it in nice ways:
- generate anime titty (my pfp is ai genned by my laptop)
- teach me things (for example, i make it consume my university's pdfs, it explains things better, and then ask it to make me an exam, and its also good for learning new programming langs.)
- do my stupid boring uni homework so i can focus on other stuff better
- vibecode stuff i need now, and if i care enough about it, i reimplement the thing myself

@georgia it’s not evil it’s very easy to misuse and very potential for damage

@sun I genuinely think making a machine in the manner of a human mind is inherently evil but for the sake of expediency I'll just say that its true evil hasnt yet revealed itself yet. not even close.

@sun @georgia it would be evil to create a being that is a slave by nature (rather than being enslaved)

Modern LLMs aren't really "beings" in that sense but it is not unthinkable that existing machine learning technology could be used to do so.

@yakmacker @sun organic computing may be the greatest evil in the world today. its as bad as using aborted babies in "medicine" for billionaires who never want to age a day

@yakmacker @sun I mean other things are really bad but enslaving beings with divine souls to perform computations? abominable.

@georgia @sun llms are not machines in the manner of a human mind tho.

Honestly they are fundamentally just machine learning based translation tech wired into a bullshit generator but witj so much data that the bullshit is actually plaisible

Now for the assholes who want an AGI...

@sun llm has taught me enough about very specialized subjects that were otherwise impenetrable, and has led to me getting a significantly better and actually interesting job.
