bhakta --> one who worships, venerates
culturally, you could describe yourself and be described as a bhakta of whatever god you worship. e.g. in hindi, "mera dost ganesh [ka] bhakt hai"; gloss: "of-mine friend ganesh ['s] worshipper is"; tl: "my friend is a worshipper of ganesha"
then you widen from that to describe fanatics, esp. of politicians, esp. hindu or "right-wing" (indian left vs right isn't fully analogous to the west) ones, as bhakts. so a modi-bhakt is basically a die-hard always-trump kinda guy but for modi.
i'm not sure the context meeper is using it and am less familiar with .in politics than other indians.

and to clarify yeah I meant bhakta as the indian version of a magatard(ish) or the ones who become diehard hypocrisy defenders (again all indiapols are kachra bhanti in the same way) just because they wave more bhagwa this time

@meeper @HatkeshiatorTND i have described myself as raising bhagwa but I mostly do it in a general pro-india way that pisses off racists not in like a BJP way. >.< thanks for the clarification! I should go to bed...

Basially any context which implies political affiliation (+ contextual clues towards it) could imply the negative sense.

@meeper @HatkeshiatorTND I'm not a neo-vedantin or iskcon I kinda have my own thing going mostly influenced by kashmir shaivism and vaishnavism and muh personal supramundane experiences. I kind of ignore all the scriptures that arent in the prashthana trayi. but I won't call myself more than an enthusiastic dabbler until I do japa every day and learn my first Indian language.

Old times there were gurus that were worth it, but don't really see anyone who really says anything substansial, especially with respect to today (most having an isolated, anachronistic memory osrt of view, rather than what is expected of today)

@meeper @HatkeshiatorTND they translate often forgotten yogic texts in sanskrit into hindi and english and they sell them for pretty cheap as PDFs. I do think youre right that they aren't perfect though especially because theyve done takedown requests for pirated PDFs floating around. I dont know much about modern Indian politics though

Geeta Press is probably the most alright of such institutions (they had a good dharamshala in rishikesh, which was honestly the most pleasant part of the stay there (aside from the rafting)
also a nice and really cheap eatery
