@anemone @sun I love places like this. $10 and you have enough calories to shut down your gallbladder

@eris I had it once cuz it opened up across the street from a Walmart we frequented.
Then I moved here and got food from an actual Chinese place. Unless you're very particular about the experience, actual Chinese is better. Cuz somehow the one type of restaurant in this country that will actually fill you up for cheap is them.

McDonald's for ten bucks will do one meal for me. Happy China for ten bucks is 3-4 meals.

@Paradox I still think a lot of what people consider actual Chinese food is American Chinese food, like those cheap but fill you up places aren't authentic either

They are really good though. And better to support a mom and pop there than Panda

I've seen some funny meltdowns about Irish Chinese food being so different from the typical perceptions of Westernized Chinese food. Spice bags don't seem particularly Chinese or even Chinese inspired, but they were invented by Chinese immigrants for Chinese restaurants, much like most of the American Chinese dishes that lack any basis in cuisine from China, and they're seen as a typical Chinese food.

@eris My local dying mall had a burger place run by this guy and his dad, possibly Turkish?
Loved going there for burg and curly fries. They shut down when the pandemic hit, never saw them again. Sadge.

I think you'd have found him hot. Tall face that was well built, a bit olive, clean shaven.

Maybe Panda has better PR. Just like Taco Bell is the quintessential American Mexican, even though locally run actual Spanish/Mexican restaurants exist. My mom took me to one. Lovely architecture.

@Alex @eris
I'm intrigued Irish Chinese is a whole separate thing. Very different culinary cultures, I'd think.
It'd be as weird as British Indian, if I didn't know the former invaded the latter at one point.

French fries, chicken, onions, and chili peppers, all seasoned with some blend of spices I'm unsure of, served with curry sauce. Never had it, sounds pretty good though.

I phrased that poorly. I meant that they have some things that are different and don't meet the perception, not that the cuisine as a whole is something different.

I also do not know about this. I just browse a lot of cooking reddits and the chinese food one has meltdowns about spice bags sometimes.

@Alex @Paradox so basically the same as British Chinese food?

I would try it but so long as there's actual Chinese restaurants out there too like I need dumplings and shit

I've only tried it once a little over a year ago and it was ... food court noodles+chicken-substance+msg. It wasn't bad, but it was just fast food carbs with extra carbs. Meh.
