@kaia maybe alpine (or any other light distro, though alpine is very user friendly imo) with xfce or lxqt.
though you could try xubuntu too, which is ubuntu with xfce.
for me xfce was always pretty light weight. though more heavy then lxde/lxqt. (at least it was back when i tried)

@kaia So far the lightest distro I know is antiX.
And what about some other distros that ship with LXQt just as Lubuntu? Fedora is known from shipping mostly vanilla desktop environments.

Put 8 gig of RAM in it and he'll probably be fine a few more years. 2 is nearly unusable today, unless you're into TUI software, 8 is enough for most things.
Getting used to new hardware isn't easy either — even if it's not something new and shiny with dedicated "AI key", you can always get him a newer Thinkpad, but even in this case… different keyboard alone might make you think "I don't like it at all!"
Having more RAM might even get your issues with Lubuntu resolved — 2 gigs is too little, it might be a problem of its own.

@kaia I have found that Debian usually offers a decent user experience with fewer resources than *buntu distros.
Depending on the hardware, of course.
2 Gigs of RAM might be a little light for Debian, but I'd still give it a shot.

Will fix that, then you select, once, the MATE DE at the login page.
I recommend removing the default MATE menu and use the compact menu.

At risk of sounding like a broken record, I would try Mint.
