@georgia @lizzie the (at least perceived) vast gulf in the difference between "is jesus god" and the niggling philsophizing of the physitismists that could put the worst theory-reading leftist infighting to shame was one of the first major blows to my faith back in the day

@georgia @apophis yeah. they challenge some pretty fundamental stuff and they weren’t condemned as a strawman

@lizzie @apophis I agree that any ideology where jesus is inferior to being fully God is a heresy

@georgia @apophis i would also say that while “nestorianism” as practiced by the church of the east is fine from what i can find, nestorianism as condemned by ephesus and chalcedon is, and generally the impulse of trying to say that God couldn’t really be incarnate definitely is

@apophis @georgia tbh my main reason for being protestant is that i just do not trust the church to not be petty morons

@apophis @georgia i think a lot of catholic and orthodox ideas about the church require a trust in it that i just do not have

@lizzie @georgia losing that trust after internalizing every single extra ecclesiam nulla salus theological argument probably made me a stronger atheist than i had been as a mere exvangelical

@lizzie @apophis theres a debate between hindus on whether God incarnates with a body made of the gunas or made of pure "Brahman-stuff" and that strikes me as similar to the physitisms

@georgia @apophis oh yeah the latter would be pretty much monophysitism which all the three major/surviving sides of that argument would disavow

@lizzie @apophis this is why avatar is not super accurately translated as incarnation but is literally "descent"

@lizzie @apophis I could go on between the fundamental differences between the monotheists and the monists and those who think the impersonal brahman comes before personal bhagavan/ishvara or vise versa but I lack the energy today smdh.

@lizzie @apophis just know some think God is primarily formless and attributeless, others think God has infinite forms and attributes and exists in an abode like a kingdom of heaven. theres a lot of debate and yet hindus have managed to not kill eachother for it. we just write strongly worded dissents in our bhashyas.
