I know I criticized the bhagavata purana a lot but the parts about krishna are excellent. I also really like the story of gajendra.

okay i like this subversion of the puranas typical sexism. for context: the brahmana men wouldnt give krishna and balarama any food, being materialistic and seeing them as mortals.

theres something very compelling about reading about incarnations of God who are perceived as regular humans by the other people in the story. its like being let in on a divine secret. christians and hindus have both felt this enchantment!

bhaktas in the bhagavata purana:
those who know the atman see no difference between any embodied beings including themselves, they transcend all dualities, they see God in everything and everything in God

also bhaktas in the bhagavata purana: o heroic king! o twice-born brahmana!

if you think the divine right of kings exists in medieval Christianity, it sure does it exist in medieval Hinduism...

speaking of shitty curses, in this one story I was excited to see an unrighteous cursing brahmana see his end but of course he is forgiven in large part because hes a freakin brahmana! oh well.

hate to say it but its so obvious this purana is mostly not of (direct) divine origin but was written by brahmana ascetic (males ofc). it shows such a contempt for the householder stage of life and despite being about bhakti which transcends all categories of birth it is deeply sexist and casteist.

lotta contradictions in this purana. sometimes sacrifices are considered excessive and violent, other times theyre celebrated. I doubt any of those horse killers in the past were reincarnated as Indra.
