I can't tell if I like the "this exact question you just asked me was asked by X to Y aeons ago, now time for a story in a story" device or not

the "holy places and gods purify after a while but brahmanas purify simply from a glance" quote that bothered me so is translated in this book as "saints purify" with gods referring to murtis. this makes sense. I have seen two versions of it in this book and both times its "saints". here's the second version.

balarama needs to calm his shit too. with his drunkenness and his violence... only his killing of a brahmana is criticized by the puranic text -_-

I guess the bhagavata puranas krishna wanted to remove the military burden from the earth and that explains why he killed. but he killed both in and out of war... although mostly in war.

adult krishna of the bhagavata purana is frankly a huge disappointment for those looking for more of the God we found in the Bhagavad Gita. he simply doesnt reflect the true character of God. God is above dharma and adharma but He should also be the highest example to follow in his avataras, even if not always literally. but Krishna in this purana is quick to anger, easily appeased by praise, and munificent first and foremost to those who are born well (or are his devotees, which does make sense). krishna shows mercy onto some of those he kills by granting them liberation, but this is depicted more as a reflection of either the purity of his body which touches them or of the potency of absorption on God, even if it takes the form of enmity with God. this is an interesting message but I dont think it truly reflects Gods infinite mercy, also because the kinds of liberation they receive are typically "inferior" forms.

the story of paundraka is so silly. I don't like how Siva is portrayed in much of this purana...

the story of nriga sucks ass. he didnt deserve to be reborn as a lizard. he just made a mistake which was tiny compared to his good deeds but the writers of the purana want to instill fear of crossing the brahmanas so they had him punished so even though he tried to remedy the situation. its messed up.

the bhagavata purana kinda sucks after krishna leaves vraj to kill kamsa. its not worthy of keshava.
