few know this but small acts of preemptively cultivating being as competent and functional as you can within the practical limits of your current circumstances builds over time and will make you more capable of surviving the coming collapse. if you can't wash your own dishes how do you expect to hunt and cook rat meat?

@nyx I find it weird if some collective hasn't come up with wartime or similar crisis plans on how to stick together if shit hits the fan

@nyx I was talking about DIY electric generation today and I realized I have no idea how to build a wind or water generator so I decided I should try to build one from junkyard parts

@nyx @vivi once you finish the food served upon it you can eat it itself it’s a nice bonus like extra tracks on an album’s deluxe version

@scathach @nyx watch all the practical engineering videos while you can still learn from them and start lots of projects you don’t need to finish, just to get a feel for things

having enough surface-level knowledge and a bit of experience means you know where to dig for solutions and can synthesize ideas most people would not think of because they are used to being overspecialized cogs in the machine.

also consider that the library will be inaccessible once the internet is gone. you won’t be the only one looking for books when everyone figures out that basic necessities no longer materialize on store shelves and hospitals and pharmacies don’t have infinite stock, and some people will definitely take advantage of that.

make friends with resilient people who have seen things die and know how to stay focused and optimistic. you don’t want to be near the polycules when everyone realizes they’re just another useless mouth to feed and there isn’t anyone left to cry to.

@nyx Feral and domestic cat meat tastes good, especially seasoned with a lemon marinade. Just sayin'.

@anemone @nyx Insects are also a great source of protein. A lot of edible stuff that people would never consider actually tastes really good when you are close to starvation or in need of a particular nutrient.

Example is eel gills which are rich in blood. They taste pretty rank unless you're body is craving iron and then they taste great.
