I keep seeing a universal belief from poor MAGA voters that they think Trump will make them rich

And tbh I'm starting to see how he duped the working class into voting for him. These people are stupid as hell and got bribed into a false hope.

Trump preyed upon economic hardship and it was an effective strategy.

It's not super different from the circumstances that led to Hitler.

@eris nobody thinks that (even though my stonks happen to be up 8% just on the election news)

what people think is they'll be able to find a job. have american products be more affordable due to domestic manufacturing. stop spending on foreign wars. reasonable stuff like that. you're creating a straw man.

@georgia @meowski @eris tariffs are equivalent to taxes. Trump nightmare scenario is them raising tariffs but not reducing taxes. Hope it doesn’t come to this.

@georgia @lain @eris tariffs will have to be gradual since we're totally dependent on import products. they are a great way to encourage domestic production and remove people's income tax burden though. i fully support a controlled transition from income tax to tariffs to fund the federal government
1

@lain @georgia @eris they really are not equivalent at all. if companies produce domestically, creating jobs and keeping wealth here, they don't have to pay the tax.

@eris I know, it was a joke.

But there are plenty of cases where people rallied around a leader following hardship. Could have picked Bukele, Duterte, or Putin as more contemporary examples. Specifically picking Hitler out of all those cases would seem to be for the purpose of equating Trump to Hitler, which is kind of played out.
1

1
@parker maybe it's played out but it still feels like the easiest comparison to draw. He built walls, took aim at trans and queer people, blamed social problems on minorities, censored anything related to gender, and created a powerful police state, and all of it revolved around a giant cult of personality

@arcana @eris @georgia @lain @meowski I think you haven't noticed purposeful sabotage and limitation of supplies for profit.

War profiteers do that, as do disaster profiteers.

It has literally no relation with the actual supply (same as with monopolists, disasters & wars provide temporary monopoly-like conditions), and food demand is basically a static demand as a function of population.
1
0
0
@eris @parker >created a powerful police state

Shouldn't Bush get most of the blame for this?
1
0
1
@lispi314 @arcana @lain @georgia @eris shouldn't this be a role of oh... idk, FEMA, (the federal EMERGENCY management agency) to stockpile emergency supplies? if we're going to have a federal agency for this, they should do something useful (i recommend abolishing them actually since they have demonstrated they can't/won't)

demand spikes in emergencies do still relate to supply and demand though- it's just that demand is extremely high and supply limited, enabling people to price gouge
1
0
1
@meowski @eris @georgia @lain @arcana I concur with the demonstrated incompetence of FEMA. Were they effective, price gouging would be impossible as their provided (gratis) resources would outcompete any attempts.

That being said, again, price gouging of essential goods is enabled by controlling the supply and artificially inflating its value, as food and other essentials are *not* elastic goods. With restricted mobility/alternatives, inducing a temporary monopoly/oligopoly status, prices can be artificially inflated far past any reason and far past what the market would bear for any elastic goods.

FEMA being competent would enable for the subversion of this entire mechanism. Emergency restrictions on prices to avert gouging is an attempt to use private market resources as a substitute for FEMA competence.

However, enabling FEMA to be remotely competent would also likely come into conflict with local "small government" and tax-hating culture (unless of course those funds were reallocated instead from the warmongering & hegemonizing funds).
1
0
0
@lispi314 @arcana @lain @georgia @eris >enabling FEMA to be remotely competent
there seems to be no way to enable a federal bureaucracy to be competent so that puts us right where we started.

if we take a step back and look at the example of covid and hand sanitizer, that was entirely a government created emergency. so let's shut down the funding for high risk gain of function virus research in chinese bioweapons labs and we'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone by not creating the emergencies in the first place

generally i think individuals and families and communities should be prepared for emergencies and not rely on just in time last minute delivery of critical supplies
1
0
0
@meowski @eris @georgia @lain @arcana The Covid pandemic is another example of government incompetence.

Cold War research into bioweapons had demonstrated the feasibility and reality of aerosolized or airborne bioagents, so measures for clean air should have been implemented everywhere since then. Especially with economic impact analysis on productivity & healthcare costs of unnecessary sickness in a population and the reduction clean air would induce.

Shutting down the funding wouldn't cover all vectors of release for such agents, many other states would willingly develop and use them (bioweapons also have an extremely low footprint for enterprising terrorists in comparison to many other kinds of weapons, so states are not the only actors of concern). Funding & promoting countermeasures should remain a priority.

> generally i think individuals and families and communities should be prepared for emergencies

They should. Although various other economic and logistic problems within those communities hinder this. Precarity & poverty do not lend themselves too well to disaster readiness. Normality Bias also needs to be countered in any awareness efforts (at least until the very notion of readiness becomes a new normalized automatic action).

Both are necessary.

Being Canadian, I can't speak to the American experience. But the trend towards police states transcends the guy in charge.

In Canada, under the very pro-LGBT Liberals (Trudeau being a bigger fruit than a watermelon), I couldn't leave the country, got checkpointed at borders between provinces, couldn't go into a lot of businesses without showing papers, which seems very police state-y. Similarly the UK is as progressive as it gets, and it's the biggest police state around.
