@eris terrible take, sorry. getting stabbed is not at all the same thing as hearing an offensive word and the reason why the guy was at the BAFTAs was because a movie literally about him and his disability was nominated for and won several awards

@eris also, he stepped out early into the ceremony precisely because he didn't want to be disruptive or upset anyone, /and/ the BBC failed to edit out his tics before broadcast but were more than happy to edit out a "free palestine", shame on them

@eris you're right, it is reductive and I apologize for that, but my point does stand that it's a false equivalence. and I do think that disabled people shouldn't have to "stay home" just because their presence is uncomfortable to others. especially if a movie is made about them specifically and their struggle, they have every right to be there at the award show. it was made abundantly clear to everyone in attendance that he has the condition that makes you uncontrollably say obscene and beyond-the-pale things, like intrusive thoughts that forcibly verbalize themselves.

@eris like we're talking here about a disability that causes people to involuntarily yell "bomb" at the aiport. can you imagine going through life like that? it's not a joke and it's not making excuses

@patchuun @eris i do feel like its a bit fucking ridiculous to grandstand about a man with tourettes saying something horrible up at an awards show about his movie about this very problem like i mean what did you expect to happen in this situation its basically the setup to a bad joke

@eris getting called slurs with malice isn't the same thing as hearing someone with coprolalia involuntarily utter them if you understand what coprolalia and tourette's is

@eris@yourwalls.today @georgia@netzsphaere.xyz @patchuun@social.xenofem.me You should take some time to stop and think about what you're saying because you're being a huge asshole right now

@eris@yourwalls.today @patchuun@social.xenofem.me it's not going to make you bleed to death. Saying disabled people should be banned from public life is an insanely terrible take

@eris@yourwalls.today @patchuun@social.xenofem.me This specific type of verbal tic is common enough it has a name, coprolalia. You can make the "it's just one guy/girl" argument for every single person who has it. It's a shit argument and you're being a shit.

@eris I could, because I've dealt with intrusive thoughts and if the worst ones I've had shoved their way out my mouth every single time no matter how ego dystonic they may be and no matter how hard I try to suppress them I think I would suck off a shotgun; thus I can very easily empathize with this hypothetical "tranny faggot!" shouting coprolaliac and know not to take it purrsonally

@patchuun @eris i think it's the way that people got forced into that situation to "start a conversation" and ultimately promote a movie that makes it messed up. being put in a room with cameras and told that you might hear things that you will find distressing, especially given the history associated with the word and how they handled the apology after it happened, is just not okay and i think that's mostly on the organizers, hosts and the BBC.

@fisk @patchuun I can admit that perhaps my own understanding of tourettes got set back by this situation, but I still think people are overwhelmingly quick to dismiss the harm done to black people. Especially some of the ones in this thread who love saying the N word on fedi and think that's okay to do.

It can surely be both problems that need to be addressed right? Understanding of tourettes and impact of racism

@eris @patchuun I thought every trans person was a tranny pile of sticks or that's what nerds on the Internet call me

@eris @fisk yeah saying the n word as a nonblack person out of your own volition is a completely different story, that's obviously not okay. and the BBC and BAFTA handled the situation pretty much as poorly as they possibly could have

@eris that understanding is a more complicated process than being given a trigger warning and a half-apology the day of the event.
